Uncle Sam's Niche Business

Uncle Sam has a Niche Business You wont find it in any of the many niche directories on the Internet, but Uncle Sam has a booming niche business. The niche that your Federal Government has carved out is making pennies. A niche market is a smaller portion of a larger market. In dollar value pennies are a very small part of the monetary system so it could be called a niche in the mint system. The goal of Internet entrepreneur is to establish a niche business that can be very profitable. Since it is a niche (small part of a larger market) it is too small to attract competition from larger enterprises. The Federal Government doesn't have competition and as we all know too well the goal is not to make money but to SPEND money. While the spending minting pennies is infinitesimal relative to most Federal spending it is growing rapidly. The cost of the metals to make the penny has more than doubled in the last year to more than 0.8 cents. The so called copper penny is made mostly of zinc with a very thin coat of copper. The government spends at least another 0.6 cent to make each penny for a total cost of 1.4 cents for each penny. Last year the mint made 7.7 billion pennies. That means the mint spent $308,000,000 more than the value of the pennies. Production is up in 2006. The U.S. Mint is producing through April 2006 at an annual rate of 9.5 billion a year. Why the increase? It may be because speculators are hoarding them for the time it may be profitable to melt them down for the value of the metal. The Benjamin Franklin quotation "A penny saved is a penny earned" will have to an addition "if you melt it down." With the value of the penny almost nil why do we still have pennies? The value of the penny is about 1/10 of what it was in 1950. It makes as much sense for us to have pennies as it would to mint 1/10 cent pieces in 1950. You can't buy anything with a penny. There is no more penny candy, coin collectors don't accept pennies. The five and dime store is now the dollar store. The Tooth Fairy doesn't even deal in coins today certainly not pennies. The going rate is $1.00 One objection to eliminating the penny is retailers would round up those great bargains of $9.98 to $10.00. Most retailers would gladly lower them to $9.95 if they didn't have to deal with the added expense and time in dealing with pennies. The biggest defenders of the penny are the sales tax advocates and the an according to William Safire, the New York Times columist zinc lobby. Don't expect to see pennys disappear soon. Maybe in 50 years when the value is 1/100 of cent.
