Byron Pitts is an award-winning journalist for CBS news. But there was a time in his life when a career in broadcast journalism seemed like an impossible dream, and Pitts appeared headed only for failure.

As a child, Pitts stuttered and struggled in school. By the time he reached sixth grade, tests revealed him to be “functionally illiterate.” But his mother provided him with tools to help him with his reading and gave him incentives to study harder. With her support, Pitts moved beyond remedial reading classes and made it through high school then on to college.

There he would face an even greater challenge....discouragement. Unable to make the grade, Pitts was placed on academic probation. To make matters worse, an English professor's response to his research paper was, “You're wasting my time and the government's money...You shouldn't be here.”

Fortunately, not everyone felt that way. Ulle Lewes, who ran the university's writing center, encountered a tearful Pitts in the administrative office. He was there to withdraw from his English class. After a brief exchange and a scan of that research paper, Lewes saw a bright young man with potential who'd never developed the proper study skills. She offered to work with him.

Pitts also received help from a fellow dorm resident, Peter Holthe. When Holthe learned that Pitts' goal was to be a news correspondent, Holthe suggested Pitts learn a new word every day and practice his pronunciation of it.

Holthe coached Pitts in role-playing exercises to help him develop his speaking skills and overcome his stuttering. Even though Holthe had doubts that Pitts could achieve his dream of reporting the news on the air, Holthe was still willing to help him.

Through Pitts' own determination and hard work, and with the encouragement and tutelage of some special people, he earned a degree in journalism and speech communications. He admits that he still has trouble reading. But that just means he's always the first one to grab the ticker that's coming across the wires.

Now, this ties in with the Paul Potts post I did a few weeks ago....why is it that some people are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their dreams while others especially people trying to make a living online just sit back and refuse to accept that ANY business (offline or online) requires work and dedication?

If you wouldn't dream of starting a business in your home town, knowing all that you would have to go through as far as monetary layout, education, license fees, etc., why would you think starting a business online would be any different. Yes, there is the fact that online communication can be a little cheaper....BUT don't think that spamming people will get you ahead...it will just make them steer away from anything you are doing that MIGHT be worthwhile.
