We all know how important it is to backup our data...however, sometimes we get sidetracked and don't backup as often as we should. Did you know that you can backup your files, photos, etc online and save your important data there? I personally use X-Drive which offers 5GB of free storage space and I-Drive which offers 2GB of free storage space. (When my storage space is used up, I just delete the older files and upload the newer ones, and I always use the encrypted option). Of course both of these services offer a paid option as well as do most of the others listed below.

I still backup to an external drive with Norton Ghost, but I want to be extra cautious so I also backup to an online backup service. This may or may not be something you want to do, but just be sure you backup your data in some manner.

Please note that some file storage services will cancel your account if you don't log in for 30 days, or only offer a limited time storage. So if you are going to use any of these services, be sure to read their TOS so that you don't lose your stored data.

Trusting important corporate or personal data to an online backup provider can be unsettling.

Typically, secure data backups have resided on local tapes, CD’s or floppies that stayed under one’s physical control. With online backup, the data is sitting in someone else’s server.

To alleviate the security concern, most online backup providers use military grade encryption to make sure that only you have access to your data.

In some cases, users may decide not to encrypt the data, in order to speed up data transfer between the user’s computer and the backup server. In this case, one has to make sure that the backup provider is trustworthy and have internal policies that guarantee privacy and security for client’s data.
