When trying to build their personal contact lists, people
often wonder how to get a conversation started with
people. It seems that many people feel that they just
don't know how to get the ball rolling.

And I can remember when I first started maketing
online - the whole process did seem quite daunting!
So how do you start a conversation with a stranger?

Actually, it's quite simple. When writing to people,
write as though you are writing to a friend and don't
try to sell them something right out of the gate.

Remember, first build the relationship and the trust,
then worry about the sale. The key point is that in
order to succeed online, you need a large personal
contact list, and you need to communicate with your
list regularly - which does not mean bombarding
them with ads...

What you should do is pass on relevant information
that you come across that will help them build their
business, or marketing techniques and tools that
will be of use.

Also, try to get to know people personally. Get a
dialogue going by asking open ended questions
that will require a response, such as: "How long
have you been marketing online?" "What is your
primary business?" "What tools are you finding
work well for you" or make a comment on something
that you have noticed about some element of their
email.

For instance, does the email address itself tell you
anything about your contact? Notice here:
MomOfOne@example.ie. I can glean that this person
is the mother of one child, and can open up the
dialogue by asking how old her child is, boy or
girl, how old, etc, and can relate to her as a parent
myself. Or if the email address is:
lovesoldcars@example.ie I would know that this
person probably is an old card buff and would
relate my knowledge (if any) about this subject.
You can see how this could be very helpful in
conversing with your contact list.

Use the above suggestions to strengthen your
personal contact list, and remember, people who
know and trust you are more likely to join you in
business ;o)
