Bird Flu Found In Leopards and Tigers!
UPDATE!!Bird Flu is back in the news! 1-24-06 on the Oprah Winfrey show, the discussion was very disturbing. According to Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert from the University of Minnesota, the question is not IF but WHEN this flu will strike and cause the next Pandemic.
What should I do to prepare for a pandemic?
There are a few simple steps you can take to prepare yourself and your family for a possible pandemic. Dr. Osterholm suggests that you:
- Stock your cabinets with enough canned goods to last four to five weeks.
- Stockpile your prescription drugs, if possible.
- Speak with city officials to make sure your community has enough chlorine on hand to purify the water, in case shipments stop coming. Many cities only keep enough chlorine on hand to last five to seven days.
There are also many lessons we can learn from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Osterholm says. Americans need to be prepared to live without modern luxuries, and communities should have a plan to bury their dead in a timely, respectful manner. All of this is really scary stuff, don't you think? I know I am going to make some plans. I already have a generator and I always can my own garden bounty, so I think I am more prepared than alot of folks, but the consequences of this flu can definitely be catastrophic. I hope everyone takes a cue from this program and does their best to prepare their family for the worse. I always feel it is better to be safe than sorry. Let me know your thoughts on this. From: Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Influenza virus is not known to affect wild felids. We demonstrate that avian influenza A (H5N1) [Bird Flu] virus caused severe pneumonia in tigers and leopards that fed on infected poultry carcasses. This finding extends the host range of influenza virus and has implications for influenza virus epidemiology and wildlife conservation. PMID: 15663858 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] 2004 Dec;10(12):2189-91 Highly Pathogenic H5N1 (Bird Flu)The new bird flu virus H5N1 has killed more than 60 people in Asia and could kill millions worldwide if it mutates into a form easily passed from person to person which could cause a pandemic such as the world has never seen. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the risk of a pandemic human influenza strain emerging from co-infection of a human influenza carrier by avian influenza A H5N1 virus is small; however, the potential global public health impact could be catastrophic. Latest development: Romania and Turkey have reported avian flu in their birds, too. Problem: while the H5N1virus is not now resistant to antiviral medications, it could mutate-and currently there is no vaccine for humans. What to do: When traveling to affected areas in Asia avoid direct contact with live poultry, eat only thoroughly cooked poultry and eggs, and wash hands frequently. Asthma, Indians and Breathing
George Catlin an American artist traveled thousands of miles from 1830 to 1836 following the trail of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Catlin visited 50 Indian tribes living west of the Mississippi River from present day North Dakota to Oklahoma.
During his years of association with Indian , he concluded that one of the main causes of ailments affecting civilized peoples is their habit of breathing through the mouth.
The Indian child, he observed was never allowed to sleep with its mouth open. The mother always pressed the baby’s lips together as soon as it fell asleep, to form a lasting habit. So, when the child grew, sleeping or waking, it kept its mouth shut. Mr. Catlin claimed this habit was the reason why native races of North and South America used to enjoy such good physical perfection and escape so many of the diseases of civilized communities. Among millions of natives, he never saw or heard of a hunchback or crooked spine, or an idiot or lunatic and premature death was also uncommon.
“Perfect sleep” he said, “Cannot be obtained with the mouth open”. Contrast the natural repose of the Indian child, educated to keep its lips closed, with the uncomfortable slumbers of the child of civilization, with its little mouth wide open and gasping for breath. The firmly shut mouth, too, promotes good looks, for whoever saw an open mouth that was attractive?
So, what does all this have to do with Asthma?
Plenty…breathing is important for asthma control and overall health. It is plain that nostrils are for breathing, and are the natural outlet of the lungs. The sides of the air passages are lined with hairs which, to some degree, prevent ingress of noxious matters. You are healthier if you breathe through the nose.
It should also be noted that, by drawing our breath only through the nostrils, the air is warmed by contact with the membranes before it reaches the lungs, and so inflammation and congestion of these organs are avoided.
Some other strategies for Asthma:
Alfalfa Tea (Medicago sativa): will relieve the difficult breathing of a person suffering from asthma Honeycomb: Chew a piece of honeycomb to relieve the stuffy feeling of allergy and to help breathing. Hops: Lying on a small pillow filled with Hops (Humulus spp.) will one breathe more easily. Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) will relieve symptoms of asthma Jimson Weed: Smoke the leaves of jimson weed or stramonium (Datura stramonium) to relieve asthma. Jimson Weed(Datura stramonium and Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) The symptoms of asthma are relieved by smoking a mixture of these leaves, The leaves are dried, crumbled, mixed and smoked in a pipe several times a day and just before retiring. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus): Leaves are made into a tea which is drunk for asthma and into a poultice which is applied to the chest for breathing problems.
