Solution to the "Baby Boomer" Syndrome

Many companies are in the process of  “doing more with less” and the Baby Boomer generation are the ones suffering the most.  Take these cases:

 

BW (53) hasn’t had a full time job in his field which is managing telecommunications equipment since 2000.  This person says they feel it is because of age. Last month this person had to drive 7 hours for an interview. This person says they signed in at the desk and as soon as the person to do the interview came out to greet them, their face fell.  This person feels that no matter how you present yourself all they see is “older”.

 

SC (52) was a project manager at a company which sells demographic data, was laid off in 2001.  SC says that “Business has already started the boomer outflow by letting them go and replacing them with cheaper, inexperienced people.  Retirement?  Yeah, right”.  When this person applies for a mid or entry-level position, they are asked why they would be applying for such a position and what pay they want.  Says SC “I feel these people are just filtering candidates…for keywords and salary ranges.” “I question whether I will ever get up to the level I was at. The paradigm has shifted.”  This person didn’t get another IT job for 2 ½ years.

 

Now, no ethical law-abiding company discriminates by age, but perhaps some companies hesitate to hire older workers because they fear these people will be expensive short-term workers looking to fill a few years before retiring. Whatever the reason, the trend seems to be that companies are seeking out younger, cheaper workers.
