CASKET PRICE GOUGING

Caskets rake in over 3 billion dollars in sales annually in the U.S. alone, and the average price tag on a casket sold by the funeral parlor that you choose is slightly more than $2,000.00 (US).  This price is primarily for their visual appeal, and depending upon the funeral parlor you choose may be paying up to 6 times that price!

These days many people are purchasing caskets from other sources such as discounters that sell caskets at prices starting under $900.00.  BUT, if you buy from a discounter, be aware that the funeral parlor you are using just may inflate the prices of other services to make up for the loss of their casket sale to you.

So….get your price list of charges in writing BEFORE you purchase the casket elsewhere so that you can then compare if you do decide to use a wholesaler. [The Funeral Rule, enforced by the FTC requires funeral directors to itemize prices in person and, if asked, by telephone. That includes providing descriptions of available selections and prices before showing caskets].  Comparison shop other funeral providers in your area, also.

*IMPORTANT* A funeral provider cannot refuse services just because a casket has been purchased elsewhere, nor can it legally increase other charges to compensate for the loss of the sale of a casket.

*REMEMBER* To avoid added stress to your family by making your arrangements while you are still alive!  This will help them avoid overspending and will ensure you get what YOU want.

Very good information, Toni! The parlors do have a tendency to overcharge since you are usually not thinking very clearly in your time of grief and knowing you want the best for your loved ones, they tend to take advantage of that. As you point out, planning ahead is always best!~Gina
