Sex and the Senior LifeA new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine finds that many older Americans maintain and enjoy an active sex life well into their 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. The study is being touted as the first comprehensive look at the sex lives of older adults in the USA. Professional interviewers spoke with 3005 US residents ages 57 to 85 and found that the frequency of their sexual activity was comparable to that reported among adults 18 to 59 years of age. Many seniors are now winking at their children and saying, "What did you think we were doing in that empty nest?" Read the whole story.

That goes beyond calcium Did you know that some of the bones in your body are competely regenerated every 3 months? While it may seem like something out of science fiction, it's not. Our bodies constantly break down and build bone. It's a natural and necessary process. How else would our bodies be able to heal a broken bone? The key is to keep this process in balance, meaning you constantly build new bone at the rate you break down existing bone. This is the way you maintain optimal bone density and strength. But as we age, this balancing act becomes less efficient. Bone mass density, or simply put, the weight of the skeleton may start to drop. In addition, calcium absorption declines, and our level of Vitamin D and certain hormones start to fall. All of these directly affect the health of our bones--and this goes for men as well as women. Our modern diet is filled with an abundance of acid-producing products that literally rob bones of calcium in order to balance the body's pH. Over the years, most people have taken in far too many highfat meats, refined sugars, fast foods, sodas, and over-the-counter medications, which are all acidic, and therefore throw off the environment needed for strong, dense bones. You'll be amazed at how your bones respond to the right nourishment. You really can do alot to help them as bones are living organs that remodel themselves constantly. Nurture them, feed them properly, and they will respond. There are obvious things you can do to help such as making dietary changes to decrease acidic foods and include more calcium rich foods like dairy products, broccoli, and soy. Plus, begin doing weight bearing exercises which do wonders for the strength of your bones. These changes will go a long way in helping your bones, but getting the right balance of nutritional supplements is one of the MOST important things you can do to maintain strong, resilient bones.

It may be a symptom of nerve damage
Diabetic neuropathies are nerve disorders caused by diabetes. The conditions lead to numbness and sometimes pain and weakness, commonly in the hands, arms, feet, and legs. The U.S. National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse says the longer a person has diabetes, the greater his or her risk of developing a form of neuropathy. Doctors can use a number of tests to diagnose diabetic neuropathies, including a comprehensive foot exam, a nerve conduction study, or a nerve or skin biopsy. The best way to prevent this form of nerve damage is to keep blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible with a healthy diet, exercise, and medication, the agency says.

Coffee Protects Against Blinding Eyelid Disorder Caffeine may limit the problem in the same way it eases Parkinson's, experts say A daily dose of java may help prevent a form of severe eyelid spasm that can cause a person to become "blind," a new study suggests. In people with primary late onset blepharospasm, the eyelid muscles contract uncontrollably and cause involuntary blinking. In extreme cases, people are unable to prevent their eyelids from clamping shut and, despite having healthy eyes, they become functionally blind, according to background information in the study. The new study included 166 Italian patients with primary late onset blepharospasm and two control groups -- 187 people who were relatives of the patients and 228 people with another kind of facial spasm disorder -- who were asked about their coffee consumption. A team at the University of Bari found that just one to two cups of coffee a day helped protect against late onset blepharospasm and that increased coffee consumption also delayed onset of the condition -- 1.7 years for each additional cup of coffee per day. The study authors noted that previous research has suggested that caffeine may help prevent Parkinson's disease by blocking adenosine receptors, and the same mechanism may play a role in coffee's protective effect against primary late onset blepharospasm. "Considering that the caffeine content of a cup of Italian coffee (60-120 milligrams) is similar to the average content of a cup of American coffee (95-125 milligrams), the protective effect on the development of blepharospasm may be exerted at caffeine doses greater than 120-240 milligrams, comparable with the caffeine doses suggested to be protective against Parkinson's disease," the study authors wrote. Their findings were published online June 19 in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Previous studies have suggested that smoking helps protect against blepharospasm, but the authors said they found no evidence to support that theory. More information The U.S. National Eye Institute has more about blepharospasm. -- Robert Preidt SOURCE: BMJ Specialist Journals, news release, June 19, 2007

In reading this month's issue of The Douglas Report I read about the issue of mammograms being responsible for spreading breast cancer. ---This is an excerpt from that article: You'd be hard pressed to find a woman in this country (USA) who hasn't been conned into geting a routine mammogram. And yes, I mean conned, Mammograms are touted as the best form of early detection for breast cancer. But in reality, getting one actually increases the risk of spreading the cancer if its present. Back in 1994, The Lancetpublished a study saying that breast compression "could cause small tumors to burst open and thus spread the cancer throughout the body." Don't American doctors read The Lancet? Its only the best medical journal in the world! ---End of excerpt Now, I have always felt that mammograms were barbaric to say the least, and now we know that they are also dangerous! The routine mammogram is just another scare tactic to get as many women as possible to buy into the system, thus lining the pockets of the prescribers, hospitals, mammogram machine makers and anyone else down the line. In using the "raise breast cancer awareness" tactic, they keep thinking up ways to keep an impressionable public pouring money into the "System". On top of this finding, the danger of radiation expsoure is tremendous, take a look at the article found on this website: it will really get you to thinking about the TRUE dangers associated with mammograms. Here you will be presented with several articles pertaining to breast cancer and mammography and some alternatives. I for one don't EVER plan on getting a mammogram again! I just want YOU to be aware of the facts and dangers. Nutrition For The Elderly
Healthy eating and nutrition for the elderly is
greatly impacted by several factors, one of them
being a change in body composition. During the
later years in life, the body will lose bone and
muscle and gain fat because the hormones aren't
very active anymore.
There are many factors which hinder an elderly
person's health. The information below will help
you to lead a healthy life - no matter how old you
may be.
Water
Water in the body decreases with age, so many older
folks will become dehydrated very easily. Sometimes
they won't feel thirsty, while other times it's
too much work to pour a glass a water. With this
in mind, it's recommended that they drink at least
1 ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of weight.
Protein
At this stage in life, protein is very important.
Protein is needed to support a healthy immune
system and prevent the wasting of muscle. Since
energy needs are less, older folks should eat high
quality protein such as eggs, lean meats, poulty,
and fish.
Carbs and fiber
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for
the entire body. You can find carbs in bread,
cereals, pasta, and other grain products. A diet
that's high in fiber and water will help to
prevent constipation as well.
Fat
Fat intake for the elderly should be limited, not
eliminated. You can limit fat by choosing lean meats,
low fat dairy products, and food preperation
methods that don't include frying.
Iron
For the elderly, iron deficiency can be seen with
those who aren't eating much. Good sources for
iron include lean red meats or breakfast cereals.
Zinc
Zinc intake is normally with the elderly, and to
make matters worse, it's not absorbed very well
either. Meat, poultry, and fish should be a part
of your diet to help you meet the requirements for
zinc.
Calcium
Calcium is one ingredient that most elderly folks
simply aren't getting enough of. Most believe
that milk upsets their stomach, and therefore they
will avoid it. They should be getting around 1,500
mg of calcium a day, and nonfat powdered milk can
be used in recipes as a substitute for milk. Other
foods such as yogurt, low fat cheese, and broccoli
can also help you meet the requirements for calcium.
Vitamin B12
In order to absorb the benefits of B12, the intrinsic
facotr must be produced by the stomach. Most elderly
people suffer from a deficiency in B12 because they
have a condition known as atrophic gastritis. This
condition causes inflammation of the stomach,
bacterial overgrowth, and the intrinsic factor.
Without the intrinsic factor, this vitamin can be
absorbed.
Each one of the above nutrients are needed to keep
an aged body in good health. Elderly individuals
should try to stay active and strive for a well
balanced diet. Even though the aged body isn't the
same as it used to be, proper care and the right
nutrients can help the elderly enjoy a healthy and
long life.

| WHICH GENERATION ARE YOU? "Hey Mom," one of my kids asked the other day, "What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?" "We didn't have fast food when I was growing up," I informed him. "All the food was slow." "C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?" "It was a place called 'at home,'" I explained.. "Grandma cooked every day and when Grandpa got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it." By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it: Some parents NEVER set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears AND Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died. My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 11, but my grandparents had one before that. It was, of course, black and white, but they bought a piece of colored plastic to cover the screen. The top third was blue, like the sky, and the bottom third was green, like grass. The middle third was red. It was perfect for programs that had scenes of fire trucks riding across someone's lawn on a sunny day. Some people had a lens taped to the front of the TV to make the picture look larger. I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called "pizza pie." When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had. I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line. Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was. All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers. I delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents. I had to get up at 4 AM every morning. On Saturday, I had to collect the 42 cents from my customers. My favorite customers were the ones who gave me 50 cents and told me to keep the change. My least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day. Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them. If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it? MEMORIES from a friend: My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to "sprinkle" clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old. How many do you remember? Head lights dimmer switches on the floor. Ignition switches on the dashboard. Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall. Real ice boxes. Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards. Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner. Using hand signals for cars without turn signals. Older Than Dirt Quiz: Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about-Ratings at the bottom. 1. Blackjack chewing gum 2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water 3. Candy cigarettes 4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles 5. Coffee shops or diners with table side juke boxes 6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers 7.. Party lines 8. Newsreels before the movie 9. P.F. Flyers 10. Butch wax 11. Telephone numbers with a word prefix (OLive-6933) 12. Peashooters 13. Howdy Doody 14. 45 RPM records 15. S&H Green Stamps 16 Hi-fi's 17 Metal ice trays with lever 18. Mimeograph paper 19 Blue flashbulb 20. Packards 21. Roller skate keys 22. Cork popguns 23. Drive-ins 24. Studebakers 25. Washing machines with wringers; and washtubs for rinsing If you remembered 0-5 = You're still young If you remembered 6-10 = You are getting older If you remembered 11-15 = Don't tell your age, If you remembered 16-25 = You're older than dirt ! I might be older than dirt but those memories are the best part of my life. ===== "Senility Prayer"..God grant me... The senility to forget the people I never liked The good fortune to run into the ones that I do And the eyesight to tell the difference." Toni Shrader |
