Sex and the Senior LifeA new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine finds that many older Americans maintain and enjoy an active sex life well into their 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. The study is being touted as the first comprehensive look at the sex lives of older adults in the USA. Professional interviewers spoke with 3005 US residents ages 57 to 85 and found that the frequency of their sexual activity was comparable to that reported among adults 18 to 59 years of age. Many seniors are now winking at their children and saying, "What did you think we were doing in that empty nest?" Read the whole story.

That goes beyond calcium Did you know that some of the bones in your body are competely regenerated every 3 months? While it may seem like something out of science fiction, it's not. Our bodies constantly break down and build bone. It's a natural and necessary process. How else would our bodies be able to heal a broken bone? The key is to keep this process in balance, meaning you constantly build new bone at the rate you break down existing bone. This is the way you maintain optimal bone density and strength. But as we age, this balancing act becomes less efficient. Bone mass density, or simply put, the weight of the skeleton may start to drop. In addition, calcium absorption declines, and our level of Vitamin D and certain hormones start to fall. All of these directly affect the health of our bones--and this goes for men as well as women. Our modern diet is filled with an abundance of acid-producing products that literally rob bones of calcium in order to balance the body's pH. Over the years, most people have taken in far too many highfat meats, refined sugars, fast foods, sodas, and over-the-counter medications, which are all acidic, and therefore throw off the environment needed for strong, dense bones. You'll be amazed at how your bones respond to the right nourishment. You really can do alot to help them as bones are living organs that remodel themselves constantly. Nurture them, feed them properly, and they will respond. There are obvious things you can do to help such as making dietary changes to decrease acidic foods and include more calcium rich foods like dairy products, broccoli, and soy. Plus, begin doing weight bearing exercises which do wonders for the strength of your bones. These changes will go a long way in helping your bones, but getting the right balance of nutritional supplements is one of the MOST important things you can do to maintain strong, resilient bones.

It may be a symptom of nerve damage
Diabetic neuropathies are nerve disorders caused by diabetes. The conditions lead to numbness and sometimes pain and weakness, commonly in the hands, arms, feet, and legs. The U.S. National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse says the longer a person has diabetes, the greater his or her risk of developing a form of neuropathy. Doctors can use a number of tests to diagnose diabetic neuropathies, including a comprehensive foot exam, a nerve conduction study, or a nerve or skin biopsy. The best way to prevent this form of nerve damage is to keep blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible with a healthy diet, exercise, and medication, the agency says.

Coffee Protects Against Blinding Eyelid Disorder Caffeine may limit the problem in the same way it eases Parkinson's, experts say A daily dose of java may help prevent a form of severe eyelid spasm that can cause a person to become "blind," a new study suggests. In people with primary late onset blepharospasm, the eyelid muscles contract uncontrollably and cause involuntary blinking. In extreme cases, people are unable to prevent their eyelids from clamping shut and, despite having healthy eyes, they become functionally blind, according to background information in the study. The new study included 166 Italian patients with primary late onset blepharospasm and two control groups -- 187 people who were relatives of the patients and 228 people with another kind of facial spasm disorder -- who were asked about their coffee consumption. A team at the University of Bari found that just one to two cups of coffee a day helped protect against late onset blepharospasm and that increased coffee consumption also delayed onset of the condition -- 1.7 years for each additional cup of coffee per day. The study authors noted that previous research has suggested that caffeine may help prevent Parkinson's disease by blocking adenosine receptors, and the same mechanism may play a role in coffee's protective effect against primary late onset blepharospasm. "Considering that the caffeine content of a cup of Italian coffee (60-120 milligrams) is similar to the average content of a cup of American coffee (95-125 milligrams), the protective effect on the development of blepharospasm may be exerted at caffeine doses greater than 120-240 milligrams, comparable with the caffeine doses suggested to be protective against Parkinson's disease," the study authors wrote. Their findings were published online June 19 in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Previous studies have suggested that smoking helps protect against blepharospasm, but the authors said they found no evidence to support that theory. More information The U.S. National Eye Institute has more about blepharospasm. -- Robert Preidt SOURCE: BMJ Specialist Journals, news release, June 19, 2007
