Dog behavior issues? Don't give up!

I recently ran across this book and after checking it out wanted to share it with those of you who may need help  with your dog.

The following is a review of the book written by a dog owner that benefitted from the book...

A review of  "SitStayFetch - Dog Obedience Training"

SitStayFetch is a thorough look at how to both prevent and deal with the more common problem behaviors exhibited by dogs. As the owner of a moderately troublesome mutt myself, I’ve spent a fair amount of time searching the Net for reliable resources on this topic, and I have to say that the level of knowledge and detail contained within the pages of this compendium is unusually exacting for an online book.

Not only that, but – again, unusually for this medium – the information at hand is actually (gasp!) reliable. Yes, that’s right - this one’s a whole new kettle of fish. Written by a seasoned dog trainer, you can relax in the knowledge that all the tips and advice included are tried and true, and come from Stevens’ real-life experiences as a professional dog trainer.

Here is what is covered:
There’s a pretty impressive range of information packed into this guide. It’s not just the problem behaviors that are covered: the book starts off with new-owner advice (how to choose a puppy/dog, the best places to get one from, breed information, puppy/dog-proofing your home, the first vet visit, housetraining, etc) and then moves to the more advanced stuff: behavioral problems (such as aggression, dominance, chewing, digging, excessive barking, separation anxiety, to name a few), intermediate-level obedience commands, health-related dog problems (allergies, cat/dog coexistence, fleas, heatstroke, and so on), and advanced commands and tricks.

My favorite parts:
In addition to the contents listed above, there’s also a pretty impressive section on dog whispering, which – in case you haven’t heard of it already – is a method of dog training based on a philosophy of clear communication and mutual respect. It’s been popularized in recent years by Cesar Millan (“The Dog Whisperer”), and is becoming increasingly well-known as an alternative and humane method for disciplining and training your dog. SitStayFetch has dedicated an entire section to dog whispering: Daniel Stevens explains the background of the technique, how to utilize voice and body language to your best advantage, and how to use the technique to calmly, assertively, and effectively correct and train your dog. Step-by-set instructions are included for the common commands (sit, down, come, stay, quiet, etc).

It is some pretty interesting reading – and, after trying out the basics on my own recalcitrant 'puppy', I was amazed at how effective the techniques suggested are. Highly recommended!

Freebies?
There’s just something about getting something for nothing. And, although my magpie-like acquisitiveness may have led me into less-than-productive purchases in the past, in this particular case I’m happy to report that SitStayFetch hasn’t let me down: the book includes some really useful freebies (wow!)

The book itself costs $37. For this price, you get a complete and detailed manual on training your dog, preventing and handling behavioral problems, and a whole bunch of general-knowledge tips and advice.

You also get a handful of practical freebies: four bonus books, dealing respectively with advanced housetraining how-to’s and troubleshooting (including both the crate- and paper-training methods); a detailed study on resolving canine aggression; how to effectively groom your dog (including information on coat care for specific breeds, dental care, and nail-clipping how-to’s); and finally, how to begin training your dog for security work.

Another particularly useful freebie: a personalized consultation with a member of the Kingdom of Pets team. If you’ve got an issue with your dog that you’d like some individual attention on, you can flick them a quick email and receive a personalized, thorough reply packed with expert advice and practical tips.

SitStayFetch: A Thumbnail Sketch
Altogether, I’m pretty impressed with this package. I’ve owned dogs on and off my whole life, starting from when I was ten – I would have thought that I was better-prepared than most to handle the quirks and caprices of my canine friends.

But since reading this book, I think my pre-SitStayFetch self was (embarrassingly) perhaps a trifle more complacent than knowledgeable - I’ve learned more since reading this manual than I’ve picked up in a near-lifetime’s worth of contact with dogs (do you know how to stop your dog from tugging on the leash, without using a check-chain? Well, I do – but until I got my hands on a copy of this book, I certainly didn’t!)

Several of the training techniques present a refreshingly common-sense, down-to-earth approach to dog training; others require a little more effort (take dog whispering as an example) but yield some pretty dramatic results. I liked the way that more than one training technique is detailed, to allow the reader to pick and choose the techniques that best suit themselves and their individual dogs.

I have no qualms in recommending this package to anyone who owns, or is thinking about owning, a dog. You don’t need to have a “problem pet” for the manual to be of assistance: there’s information included that’ll be useful to any and all dog owners.

In a nutshell: I feel that this book is highly recommended.

Animals and heat injuries

Hi everyone!  Mary McChesney here and I am passionate about pets.

I live in Phoenix where the tempurature has been 110 or more for 32 days and counting this year.

Heat is one of the #1 causes of animal death in our area - just because it isn't 110 where you are, even temperate heat can kill!

It is usually the poor dogs that suffer - they are left outdoors with no shade and no water.  I have never understood what drives people to have pets when they aren't going to care for them properly.

Here some tips for keeping your animals safe from heat injuries (common sense):

1)  KEEP THEM INDOORS during bouts of high heat - if it feels hot to you it is hot to them - just because they are animals doesn't mean they don't feel the heat!

2)  If you can't bring them in:

  • Provide AMPLE water
  • Provide shade - remember that the sun moves and what is shady in the morning may be in direct sunlight later in the day
  • Provide a comfortable place to sit or lay down - that would be a mat or even a doghouse and or doggy-type pillow.

3)  When travelling or taking your dog with you in your vehicle:

  • NEVER EVER EVER leave your pet in the car - even in winter!  Yes the car still gets hot for them!  I can't tell you how many pet deaths are associated with animals that were left in a car while their owners took care of business or shopping etc.  Don't take them if you will have to leave them in the car for any amount of time!!!
  • Be sure to have water for your pet available - if you feel thirst so will they - be sure to offer them water frequently.
  • DO NOT put your dog or pet in the back of a pickup or uncovered vehicle - even if they have a tethered leash (especially if they are tethered!).  If they are in a pet cage that is properly restrained it is acceptible but not the best way to carry your pet.  The temperature and sun will be affecting them more if they are directly exposed in the back of an open vehicle - if they jump or fall out, they will get injured and the pavement can burn them.
  • There are various pet restraints similar to child carriers available for your pet - use them.  It makes it safer for you and your pet!  It will keep them from being able to jump out of the vehicle unless you release them.

There are more ways to keep your pet safe - especially from heat-related injuries.  Keep this in mind - cold is the same but with the opposite effects - will go over that in a month or so as it gets cold out :-)

Go for a ride???

We all know how you like to take your pets - especially your dogs - with you for a ride...  But now with gas prices so high, you have cut down on your driving right?

No need - just use Ethos FR in your tank, crankcase and even transmission and you will start saving money on gas!

I noticed a change right away - within about 15 minutes after putting the first treatment in my tank, I noted that my engine was quieter - NO KIDDING!

I increased my highway mileage by 27% - went from about 16mpg to about 20mpg...  City driving varies but I get vastly improved mileage - I can't give you an increase as I live in AZ and the temps being over 100 cause us to idle while using the A/C - sometimes sitting in the car with the engine running for 30-40 mins and it is hard to calculate the mpg with that scenario - I can tell you that in the first half-tank, I used to get maybe 140 miles at best - I have come close to 200 miles since starting with Ethos FR...

Go here to start saving money - OH YEAH I FORGOT - you can make money by joining as a representative too :-)

I am ready to save money on gas!

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Pet Links

Hi - I am looking for some good pet links to add to my pets11.biz website.  Let me know if you have any links that you have found useful!

Shy scaredy cat!

My one kitty She-la is really shy or maybe anti-social.  She hardly ever comes out from under the bed or interacts with our other 4 cats.  She is one of the 3 babies that I adopted all at the same time.

She is now about 3 years old so she is pretty set in her ways :-)

Does anybody have any ideas about how to get her to be more social?

Cat fur mats?

Does anyone have a good way to keep longer fur cats from getting matted?  My 2 longer hair cats get really matted and the only way I can fix it is to cut off the tangles...

Mary
