You have the power to create magic

Did you know that you have the power to create magic? Did you know that the written word has the power to create magic in someone's life? I'm not referring to someone waving a magic wand and someone being transformed from a troll into Prince Charming. What I am referring to is this: A well written headline, sentence, paragraph or even an entire book may inspire someone to greater things. They may find a way to lose weight, increase their income, find a cure for some disease that was incurable before. They may become happier, give to charities,or simply find a temporary escape from an existence that they find either boring, harsh or otherwise intolerable. Isn't that what magic is; the power to transform lives and inspire people to do greater things? A Higher Power than yourself or anyone here knew this when one book was conceived thousands of years ago and that book has inspired people to this day. So get your ideas out now, sit down and write and create some magic in the lives of others. Hopefully this little blog post has inspired you to do so.

Ah, you speak the truth!!! Look at something as simple as the Harry Potter series... although some find it contraversal, the series has done one thing no other book has done - with the exception of the Bible. It has inspired millions of children to read, families to read together, adults to read something different from their usual literary selections, and even some grand parents are joining in the mix. The momentum that this series has generated in reading enthusiasm has helped create "Magic" where there was none just a few years ago. Up till this series became popular with the youth, it was difficult to find children, teenagers, or families who read more than the cartoons in the newspapers. Even school work was short-cutted with commercially available briefs for their book reports and science reports.
I read a book about a year and a half or so ago which was a very interesting look at the Harry Potter series and how GOD, Faith, Wisdom, Graces, etc. were present in these books and how the "Magic" and "Wizardary" were mear entertainment - but the reality, the depth and heart of the books, were the centering of GOD, Faith Wisdom and Graces. That the "Good" and "Life" over-rules and triumphs over "Evil" and "Death".
I look at my own growing up as a youth - maybe I'm unique - but I grew up in the 60's and I started 1st. grade reading "Jane Runs, See Jane Run" type books. I was "Told" to read and really never "Understood" what I read because I was so concerned about reading "Well". That the performance of reading, silently or aloud, was more important than getting the meaning behind what I read. As I thought about that, I realized that I had never finished a book cover-to-cover until I started reading computer books in High School. I NEVER read for pleasure or recreation whatsoever. I read when I wanted to know something, so "How-To" type books, academic books, and technical books became the only selection of books I ever looked at let alone read.
Fast forwarding to today, I look at my children and their friends, cousins, school mates, etc. and I'm taken aback by the amount of reading and enthusiasm they have undertaken at such early ages and how it has lasted for years!!! This is no fad that will just be around for a short time... my son who is 10 has read each of the Harry Potter books - by himself - at least 3 times each (a few more often) and has read at least half the new book in just 3 days. My daughter who is 14 (going on 40 attitude wise) read the new book in one day. She reads about a 1000 pages a day during the summer. We have a revolving door with the libraries here at home and in Maine where they spend their summers. And I'm not writing this to brag about my kids - just the opposite - I am shocked, amazed, overwhelmed - that these kids can read and understand and remember what they've read - and it's not just my kids! I see it with their friends, cousins, classmates, and others. Sunday, I was eating in a restaurant and saw 5 families with at least 1 child reading a book while waiting for their food.
So, I agree, there has been a lot of "Magic" with the written word... I know with myself, my Blog has opened me up and showed myself that writing can be fun and theraputic and FUN! And I too am reading much more than ever before in my lifetime. ;o)
