Some people try to purchase happiness by getting drunk; others build fine houses, and some travel around the world. But the goal is as elusive as the horizon. The main issue in life is service, and happiness is incidental to service. To try to win happiness from the world without serving the world is like trying to distill gasoline from water instead of from crude oil. It can't be done. Thje contractor who erects an honest, substantial buildilng wins happiness. The statesman who forwards the cause of humanity wins happiness. The judge who reads the law in the light of common sense wins happiness. Those reckless fellows who balance themselves on four-inch beams, ten stories above ground, and toss white-hot rivets back and forth, win happiness. The law of happiness is as inexorable as the law of gravitation. Without service there shall be no happiness, says nature. And it's a good law, too. -- Author Unknown Come on over and join the 10K team where you will find happiness Fran Watson Post Comment | Read Comments (0) Tupperware & Internet Marketing2006-03-23 Posted at 03:03:54 PMTupperware and Internet Marketing
You may wonder how on earth I could mention Tupperware and Internet Marketing in the same sentence. What do they have to do with each other? Well, I opened my kitchen cabinets the other day to get a container to put some leftovers in and looked at the jumble of containers. I don’t even know what all is in there anymore as I just toss in containers and close the door. I end up trying to find the lid that goes with this bowl, or the square container that goes with this lid, looking for a particular piece of Tupperware to fit my leftovers.
This is what often happens with the “containers” we get from various internet marketers, you know – the free books, the special offers. We download them and they disappear into the abyss known as our computer. Unless we are very diligent, we may never be able to find them again without spending a considerable amount of time searching for them among the free music downloads, the free games, the free e-cards, the free ringtones and other free downloads. How many times do we forget whether or not we have master resell rights, or resell rights, or giveaway rights, or only personal use rights? How many things do we have that we can offer our clients – if ONLY we could find where we saved them too???
How often do we do this to ourselves? I know for me it is way too often. We have all heard the phrase that there is a place for everything and everything in its place and I am sure that there are actually some people in this world who live by this philosophy. I am just not currently one of them, (and thankfully am not married to or living with one of them as the outcome might be disastrous). I thought about how important it is to become organized, both with my Tupperware and with my online business, the freebies as well as the books and products I have actually purchased. I started to sort the other day (not my Tupperware, my download files), and realized that it is going to take me a considerable amount of time to reorganize these items and how much more productive (and rich) I could have been if I had simply put them in the right place at the time. However, I know that I need to FOCUS on my business and it is important that everything be in the right place for easy access, so I will persevere. After I complete my computer sorting I might even tackle the kitchen cabinets. Wish me luck!!! Fran Watson P.S. To be perfectly honest I'd really much rather be writing my poems, maybe even some famous poems. Some of my poetry is getting famous. "RISK" has even been published in the Lulu Magazine and chosen for a graduation publication. Many of them can be found online along with my articles on job searching.
Post Comment | Read Comments (0) Happy Me2006-03-22 Posted at 11:38:04 AMThis is a personal note. On Monday night, March 20th, I competed in an Area Toastmasters Contest. This was a first for me. I had previously competed at a Club level, but never at an Area level. I was competing against some previous 2 and 3 time winners and I came in third in both contests. The International Speech Contest and The Evaluation Contest. My speech was on Peseverance and I talked about the choice I made in 1986 when my husband left me with 4 kids, which was to start my university degree. It took me 13 years of studying late at night after the kids were in bed as I was working full time and taking them to all the events they participated in. As I thought about this over the past couple of days, I realized that Peseverance is something that we need if we are going to succeed in Internet Marketing. We have to learn what needs to be done, to follow the steps set before us, and to keep on keeping on each day, trusting that our efforts will prove successful. I achieved my goal of a university degree in 2000 and I attended my graduation at Waterloo University along with my whole family - my 4 kids, a son-in-law, my grandson, my mom, my sister, my niece, my brother, my sister-in-law, my nephew, and my best friend who flew in from Seattle for the event. I look forward to achieving my goal of being successful as an online marketer as I work with Rob Gehring and his team with 10Khits4u and Solutions, as I attend the weekly conferences and find out from people who are in the know about what works and what doesn't. I invite you to join us - whether 10K, Solutions, Moneylegs or some other program. You will benefit from the caring and sharing that goes on here and you will learn many things that you will be able to use to grow your online business. One of the best ways to become wealthy is to create values which didn't previously exist. Read that statement again, because it encapsulates the rational selfishness philosophy.
If you merely trade values, then you make a living but do not become wealthy and empowered. There is nothing wrong with this, of course, if that is what you want, but creativity is the key to riches. As an example, imagine we are on an island together with ten other families. Let's trade values. I'll fix your hut roof for two hours, whilst you husk coconuts for me for two hours. Fair? Sure. No problem.Tomorrow, I'll fish for my family and your family for five hours as long as you collect firewood and water for your family and my family for five hours. Okay? Yes. No problems here. There's nothing wrong with this way of going on, and we could exist for centuries like this. In fact this is exactly how primitive societies did (and still do) operate. But there is no progress. Why is progress desirable? Because without it we are all still working for sixteen hours a day in mindless, numbing physical toil - just as people did for centuries, just as they are still doing now in many parts of the world. The fact that we swap jobs (trade values) doesn't actually improve our lives very much apart from a slight efficiency due to division of labor. Now, let's create some values. Assume all ten families spend three hours a day collecting fresh water from the distant mountain stream. As an 'entrepreneur' you see a way of greatly improving the physical comfort of your family whilst also greatly improving the physical comfort of every other family on the island. Indeed, you intend to create an honest, tradable value which will make you wealthy, but also make everyone else better off too. This is the essential point about getting wealthy through creating an honest value - everyone benefits. Note one vital principle here. You are not motivated by altruism to improve the lot of others. You are solely interested in improving your own lot, and that of your family. You are acting selfishly. How can you act in any other way? This is what gets you out of bed in the morning. You are rational, because you know that the only sustainable way of becoming wealthy is to create something of lasting benefit to others (an honest value) otherwise they won't 'buy' it. The only alternative is for you to use force to enslave the population of the island to your desires, or to con them out of their values. Okay, so what are you going to do? Through your ingenuity, your creativeness and your honest toil during what should be your rest period, you are going to create a neat piping system of bamboo cane which brings water down from the stream right into the village. You plan, you scheme, you work and sweat and toil. You sacrifice your leisure and a portion of your life. You take risks - it might not work. You place yourself in danger - the mountain is steep and slippery. Of course, you need to conduct a market survey, so you gather all the villagers together and say this:"For centuries the women have walked two miles a day to that hill with their water jars to fetch the daily water for their families. You all know that each family spends three hours a day in this pursuit. If I could bring you the same water, here, into the village and you could collect it in five minutes instead of three hours, would each family work for one hour a day on various tasks dictated for my family?" Now of course the resounding answer would be "Yes!" Note the vital point here: everyone is a winner. Each family gains two precious hours a day for nothing - absolutely free, for zero effort on their part. They can use this time to grow more crops, fix up the hut, or whatever else they want to do. The net effect is that their lives are enriched and their standard of living rises, all due to your ingenuity, risk, and discipline. In return for your effort, ingenuity, skill and daring, you become a wealthy man. How? Because you now have ten families working one hour a day for you and so you can 'retire.'In other words, because you created values for others which they willingly bought from you, you have freed yourself from the need ever to work again. There is no money on our island, but money is merely a token of so many units of human labor. There are several important points here. Firstly you did not force anyone to do anything. This is not slavery. The man who says that modern work is slavery is a fool who has never felt the lash on his back. In fact you freed the people from two full hours of soul-destroying donkeywork each and every day of their lives, and the price you charged them for these two hours was - zero.Secondly you did it for you, not for them, and you're proud to admit it. You're also proud of your water system. You're trying to add filtration and perhaps design an automatic coconut husker too. Furthermore, you are proud of your wealth and your achievements. It makes you feel good to be alive. You know you created something of lasting value, and you're receiving the rewards which you are due. These rewards spur you on to greater efforts which will make you wealthier and improve the living standard of all of the villagers. Also, no villager is prevented from following in your footsteps, and so you act like a hero or heroine leading others on to greater efforts. Perhaps another villager will be inspired enough to start making boats in his free two hours - the two hours which you created for him and gave to him free. Now we can all go to where the fish are plentiful - by 'renting' his boats, of course. Instead of spending three hours fishing, we now spend one hour, and pay him one hour in rent. So we are all better off to the tune of another hour a day, with no drop in living standards. In other words, we work less hard for the same amount of fish and fresh water. Or, of course, we can choose to work the same hours as before and get more fish and fresh water. In other words, everyone has become wealthier.
