Be Wary of Ethanol Production!
06:22:04 PM - 2007-08-23
HOT TOPIC IN NEW ZEALAND AND WORLDWIDE! The Ethics and Subtainabity of using Agricultural land to Produce Fuel, rather than Food is a Hot Topic in New Zealand and Worldwide. Farmers should be wary of the push to produce Ethanol, which is being driven by Politicians not Market Forces. IS USING FOOD TO MAKE FUEL for motorcars sustainable for the LONG TERM? New Zealand is committed to increasing Biofuel use, starting Next Year 2008. IS it necessary for Biofuel feeding stock to complete with FOOD Production on Prime Agricultural Land? While some crops may be needed for Biofuel production, "It makes sense to look at waste and by-products first". US researchers were looking at low-input grasses for "Biofuel Prairies: on low-grade land. In New Zealand, two research groups are working on growing algae as a feedstock for Biofuels. While Ethanol from Willow could produce a significant proportion of New Zealands Ethanol needs. BioFuels do not have to complete with Food Production, there is plenty of waste products that can be used. Such as: using second-generation biofuel feeding stocks, including municipal solid waste, sewage, algae. forestry wastes and fast growing grasses on marginal land. This is a Hot Topic in New Zealand and Worldwide be Wary of Ethanol Production! Elsie Hagley |

KIWI DOLLAR BIGGEST PLUNGE IN 20 YEARS! Black day for New Zealand as the Dollar descends very suddenly from 81 cents at the end of July to 67 cents against the American Dollar today 16 August 2007 - the biggest nosedive in 20 years. The sharemarket took a hammering wiping hundreds of millions of dollars in a black day for investors. It has now closed for the weekend at about the 68 cents in the dollar against the American Dollar! Biggest Plunge in 20 years for the New Zealand Dollar! Last time was in 1987! Now the ANZ Bank is predicting the Dollar could fall below US 60 cents. As the Dollar fell on Thursday Afternoon N.Z. Time the Reserve Bank was ready to pump cash into the banking system if required. The bank will continue to monitor conditions closely and stands ready to provide additional liquidity should it be necessary next week. The N.Z. dollar is down a hefty 7% since the end of last week - and 15% since late last month - giving some relief to exporters. It should also help cushion the economy from an expected slowdown. Meanwhile the top 50 New Zealand shares have lost almost $2 billion in value in a week and $4.6 billon since the market started to slide at the end of last week. Elsie Hagley |

10:41:41 PM - 2007-08-10
TARANAKI'S TUI OIL HAS STARTED TO FLOW! The owners of the Tui Field off theTaranaki Coast started production at the beginning of August 2007, - 19 months after the green light was given to its development. Yes Black Gold has started to flow from New Zealand's Biggest Oil Field, a major milestone for everyone concerned. The operating company Australia Worldwide Exploration (Awe), was it's first oil production from New Zealand, the first offshore production from a project operated by Awe and also the first sub-sea development in New Zealand. It has had some of the worst weather conditions seen in 25 years during the construction phase, it is a substantial achievement by the joint venture, but it has been at a cost. The final capital cost of $330 million is 10% more than anticipated. Yes Black Gold has started to flow at Taranaki's Tui Oil Well! TheTui development incoporates three adjacent oilfields with four sub-sea production wells connected to a storage vessel permanently anchored at the site.Production is expected to ramp up to produce at a peak rate of 50,000 barrels of oil a day and produce 10 millin barrels in the first year of production. It is estimated total production will be close to 30 million barrels. The Tui production wells were drilled by the big semi-submersible rig Ocean Patriot, which now as been moved another 50 km south-west to begin a new exploration campaign for Awe.
