News from NW England

Greetings!

Well it is all looking up!  The weather that is.  Alright, well we have had a few rainy days, but over-all, this week has been sunny.  Not only that, but the daffodils I planted by the tree on the street that I can see from my window are in full bloom and do give off a gladness, so to speak.  Spring is on its way!

I'm off on a business starter course at the local university college tomorrow morning.  So that is a bit exciting.  It is to get to grips with the details of running a business in today's 'climate' as those skills are a bit rusty for me, and anyway, when I last used these skills I was running departments in the textile industry which virtually no longer exists in the UK.

Now, if you were to see $50 laying in the street, would you just walk past it?  Well I wouldn't!!!  So if you want a free $50 let me know and I'll pass the details on to you.  How long this will last, I do not know, but from that original $50 at the end of February, my account is now around $64, which by any measurements is pretty good.

Anyway, until next time, and I hope you all have a very good week-end.

Regards.

Greetings!

It has been a very trying weekend.  I've had one of my occasional headaches that last several days, and do they hurt!

It's not only that, they really incapacitate me.  So I'm not at my best during these times.

But, and I'm really chuffed with myself about this, I did manage to do some thinking.  The result?  Well it occurred to me that when I wrote my blog, I was giving it a different title every time, which must have been confusing to anyone who fancied reading it.  It was confusing to me trying to keep track!

The upshot of this hard work, and it was very hard work at the time, is that I'm going to keep the title as is above.  Smart eh?  And it didn't take all that long for the penny to drop did it?  I don't think!  Hey, I'm suppose to be reasonably efficient at thinking, or so my qualifications tell me!

Anyway, I'm afraid other than the above, the weekend was a wash-out, so there is very little to comment on.  For the moment TTFN.

Regards.

Still black

Greetings.

Well it remains a black fill-dyke.  There are some other ditties with regard to the weather that I wonder what the complete rhyme is, or where it came from, so when I get the stanzas sorted out I'll give it a try with you knowledgable people.  (An oddity here, the spell checker says I've spelt it wrong, whereas I know it is correct?)

Not a very news-worthy time, so for the moment I'll close.

Regards.

February fill-dyke

Greetings All!

Well after our flurry of snow, and here I sympathise with Gina and how much snow she seems to have had to contend with, our delightful weather has turned to rain.  Along with low but not freezing weather temperatures, we have a dark, depressing sort of wet weather.  So, I think that February is going to be a black month.  Black, wet and miserable.  Roll on Spring!

Quiet week-end, but this morning after doing a few messages, I was invited for a lunch at a recently opened Turkish restaurant in the city.  I really enjoyed the meal and the company, but that is about all I'll eat for the rest of the day!  It must be the inaction, but child portions are about my limit these days.

Well I'm hoping for better weather tomorrow, so here's hoping that you are all being treated well.

Regards.

It Arrived!

Greetings!

The snow, I mean.  Yes it arrived.  Well a few flakes that is, but the concern it raised!

It's been a very exciting day today.  I know, I usually go to the library for my week-end reading, but today I had to attend an executive meeting of a charity I'm involved with, where I was expecting to get my wrist slapped.  The chairman actually gave a very good reply to the motion which was put in front of the committee, to the effect that as a committee we don't have any control over the personal lives of the members as long as they are not representing the charity.  Well done that chair!  There seems to be too much of this you can't do this, that, or the other, unless "we" say so.  There are some rude words I could use, but then I'm very well behaved, so you just have to imagine them.  Gina Weiss has a blog on this sort of thing, well worth a read.

From there it was a stagger down to the bus stop, and then into the local community centre for a coffee.  A very fast and exciting life I lead.  Then I was fortunate enough to get a lift home.

So for the moment, take care, and hope to be back before long.  TTFN.

Snow joke!

Greetings All!

I know!  A bit of an old joke, but like they say, "the old ones are the best".  It is supposed to read 's no joke, or more correctly, it's no joke.

But the point is, that we have been promised snow here in the UK in the middle of February!  Well near the middle, but in time for the old saw of "February fill-dyke is either black or white".  From my youth I remember this month being either rainy with fogs and really miserable or white with snow, and didn't your fingers hurt when they were thawing!?

As we are near the coast, we tend to have less of the cold extreems, but yesterday, as I ventured into town, where the sun had not shone there was quite a heavy frost on the ground, similar to this morning, but in the sun it was very pleasant and felt quite warm, given I was wrapped up in a winter coat.

More anon.  Regards...

A Weird Week

Greetings!

Well here, avid readers, is what has happened so far this week.

Sunday, I was set up to go to the local community centre AGM, when several friends dropped round for lunch.  It's not as bad as it seems.  I have to blame my memory, I'd forgotten they were coming, but it was all very enjoyable and many subjects were covered during the long conversations that went on.

The weather has been sunny but cool, especially at night, but that changed during last night when it became mild but damp, and oh boy!  are my knees suffering today.  I went out to the library, the week-end reading remember, and had to have my knees strapped up in case they let me down, and also because they ached so much!  The results of a misspent youth no doubt!

Last night, or more correctly, Wednesday evening Esti, my wife, treated me to a meal at a recently opened Thai restaurant here in Lancaster.  Really very nice, but I just don't seem to eat very much these days.  Even having a quite small meal, I still came out feeling as though I'd stuffed myself, but enjoyed it all the same!

The library.  Last week I explained finding the Beau Geste books.  I enjoyed the read but found the style a little dated.  So I tried to work out what it was about the style that is different from todays.  I think it is pace.  There was more emphasis on explaining the plot rather than letting the pace of the story carry the reader along.  But enjoyable none-the-less!

The other item of note is that I'm in the process of getting a webpage done.  Hey!  I'm getting really 21stC here, there will be no stopping me!

Until the next post, Regards.

The Weekend Reading

Greetings!

Well, the weather is still sunny though there is a touch of frost on the ground.  I can't make people out.  Until there was this clamour about global warming, winter weather was expected to be cold, and in this part of the world, that meant temperatures between usually +3 to -3 C.  But now, we get the weather forecasters warning us that we are getting "arctic weather" and the temperatures are likely to be freezing or below!  Come on!   This is not unusual for the West Coast of Britain!  Perhaps I'm a little out of touch.

Anyway, off I go into town, Lancaster, and treat myself to a haircut, then off to the library for my weekend reading.  Oh Joy!  I found a couple of books that I had when in my youth that were among my favourite reading.  Beau Geste, and Further Stories of Beau Geste.  I haven't read these for decades, so I chose them.  Then a few other books, then it was off to see a few friends over a coffee.

A very pleasant time.  Now just to inform you, looking through some of my father's papers last night, I came across a couple of manuscripts.  They are not his work, and how he came to have them I have no idea, but I will ask my sister.  I will also do the necessary proof reading of them, then put them here chapter by chapter.....all stuff I bet you just can't restrain yourselves from reading!

I also have to thank Gina of GAnetlink.com for actually reading my efforts.  Much appreciated.

The Sun is shining!

Greetings!

Well the frost arrived, and yes the ground had a nice layer of slipiness this morning.  And the sun did little to melt it.  But, it was really nice to feel the sun, albeit not very warm, on the face.

Looking out of the window across Morecambe Bay, there was a slight coating of snow on the higher fells of Lakeland such as Coniston Old Man, the Langdales, and Helvellyn.  Nice to see, but I get frustrated by not being able to do any fell walking these days.

Not good news last night on Newsnight with regard to being able to claim any extra monies for my knees, as the Govt. considers it correct to reduce benefits to ex-service personnel.  It reminds me of that poem by Kipling, "but it's tommy this, and tommy that until the drums begin to roll,"  then tommy can you go to the front and do what we want you to.  I get the strong impression that many of the troops of the USA are experiencing this also.

Hey, but then we are expendable!  It's just that a little appreciation would go a long way.

Enough ranting for today.  Hope this finds you all well and enjoying life.

Regards.

Saturday, 20th January

Greetings!

Well how about all that wind then?

I tried going out to the library on Thursday morning, to get my weekend reading.  I actually got out of the entrance door without it taking my arm off!  But then I was pinned by the wind against the revetment.  As I hung in the wind wondering what to do it started raining, which settled the question...I was going back inside!!

So i managed to turn round and let the wind blow me back to the entrance, and after a short wrestle managed to get back inside.

Later as I was having a mug of tea, I heard what sounded as though someone was banging a sheet of metal across the road.  Putting down my mug I went to the window just in time to see the roof of the lockup garages across the road lift into the air and sail into the road!  Luckily there was no-one in the area at the time.

I also later saw an old boy stuck by the wind against a wall across the road, he walks slightly better than I do, but he was still in an awful situation, because as the wind held him there, it started to rain!!  Oh dear!
He must have got soaked!!  I'll have a word with him the next time I see him.  There was little I could do, if I'd have gone out, I'd have been blown away before getting to him.

Now we are promised colder weather.  It seems to me to be often like this.  First we get soaked, then it freezes, just to make life interesting I suppose.

Anyway, I have enough reading to get me through the weekend.  Which reminds me, I'm in the process of having to thin out my library as there may be a possible move later in the year, and books are very heavy to move!  But I'll post the details later.
