America, The Greatest Country in the World

I've quite had my fill of the "paranoid-fear-mongering" and "conspiracy theories" accusations whenever the subject of our rights as Americans arises in an otherwise seemingly intelligent conversation. In one such exchange recently, myself and others were actually told, in so many words, that we should simply be happy to live in America, the greatest country in the world - and deal with it or leave!

Now, I don't dispute the fact that America is the greatest country in the world, it IS. Consider, for a moment, the reason it IS the greatest country in the world. Ask most any American what makes our country great and they will undoubtedly and unanimously allude to our individual liberties and freedom - making that callous statement above somewhat of an oxymoron.

Though we desparately want to believe that we enjoy the freedoms guaranteed to us in our Constitution, where privacy and freedom of speech are concepts which our administrative systems are structured upon, we must face a sharp reality. Historically, the definition of freedom has been self-ownership. The simple truth is that people who do not own the product of their labor are not free. Our Founding Fathers understood this when they drafted our Founding Documents.

We allow ourselves to be blinded to the enormous loss of freedoms we've come to experience. The laws meant to ensure our liberties have been eroded to the point of being unrecognizable. We are being denied our own Bill of Rights (Yes, RIGHTS, NOT privileges!) in the guise of a "war on terror."

Yes, we need to deal with it. Not ignore it.

Courage comes from knowing and doing what one considers right. We must stand up and challenge, educate, defend. Let us remove the blindfolds. Let us face the truth. Let us not forget the blood that was shed to keep us free. Let us not forget WHY we are the greatest country in the world.

But for the Grace of Nancy

CNN'S Headline News is described as television's only justice themed/interview/debate show, designed for those interested in the justice stories of the day. Challenging guests on the most controversial and high-profile legal issues of the day, host Nancy Grace a former violent crimes prosecutor and a crime victim herself, attempts to provide viewers with a clear understanding of not only the top trials, but also the cases often overlooked.

One such case is that of missing 2-year-old Trenton Duckett, and a telephone interview with the boy's mother, Melinda Duckett. Just hours before the interview was supposed to air, Duckett shot herself in a closet of her grandparents' home. And now Melinda Duckett's parents have filed a wrongful-death suit against both CNN and Nancy Grace claiming that Nancy's questions weren't about finding Trenton at all, but rather about implying that Melinda may have murdered her son.

More often than not labeled as rude, obnoxious, self-important, bombastic, dramatic, ruthless and vulgar, Grace's passionate views have netted her a growing fan base and have often landed her in the media spotlight. Stephen King has described the "Graceless and Tasteless" Nancy Grace as the Darth Vader of CNN Headline News. Some claim the show is on the verge of tabloid journalism.

But for the grace of Nancy, would Melinda Duckett still be alive? Will this be the one time Nancy Grace has gone too far?

Love or hate her, Nancy Grace has certainly achieved celebrity status as a broadcaster. Claiming in a previous article that the celebrity status enjoyed by stars such as Zsa Zsa Gabor and Michael Jackson played a large part in the outcome of their trials, it will be interesting to see if the same holds true for Grace when she enters the courtroom, herself a defendant.
