2007-04-30 Playing Tennis for Fun
I called some of my friends last weekend and asked if they wanted to play tennis on Saturday morning. I had 6 people respond and 3 showed up. However, one of the things I like about tennis is the friendship and friendliness of the people. There were 5 players on the courts next to us. So we needed one and they had one extra. You guessed it, we managed to pick up a fourth so we could play doubles also.
As it turns out the player that joined us was at the same level in skill as the three of us, so it made for a nice competive match. My new found partner and I managed to win the match by breaking our opponents serve on the last round. We won 6-4,6-4. Everyone enjoyed playing tennis, of course it always feels better when you win.

2007-04-24 Tennis Anyone?
Hello fellow tennis buffs. My name is Edward Pena and I have been playing tennis socially since I was 14 years old. I learned to play initially by just hitting the ball back and forth with my friends. Once I signed up for tennis at my school, I was lucky to have a Pro show me how to play tennis correctly. One of the most important things that he taught me was how to serve. He told me that the one stroke in tennis that you have absolute control over is your serve and you should learn to use that to your advantage.
He also showed me the proper way to hit a forehand stroke, a backhand stroke, and to serve and volley for a great offense net game. Many of today’s players use this strategy to put pressure on their opponents. However, there is no substitute for having a good baseline game. In social tennis matches, one of the most important things is to get the ball back with a little pace and placement. It may sound obvious, but the person that can get the ball back consistently usually ends up winning the tennis match.
The game of tennis played today has been adapted from a much earlier game called Court Tennis, Real Tennis, or Royal Tennis. Tennis is played on a courts made of composition, clay or grass, divided by a net, with a single player at each end (singles), or a team of two players at each end (doubles). Players use racquets to hit a ball back and forth, either in the air or after a single bounce.
Matches are either the best of 3 sets or the best of 5 sets. A set is played until one player reaches 6 games ahead by two or if tied at 6 all, some type of tie breaker must be played. A game is scored after a French system so the scoring is rather unusual. The score of zero is called "love" in English because of the French word for zero. You must win four points to win a game. The score goes love, 15, 30, 40, deuce when both are tied at 40-all and ad when one person gets ahead by one point. After a tie at 40-all, a player must win two points in a row to win the game.
