Austin Tennis League

Microchips Win Second Place in Austin Tennis League Division IX

The Austin Tennis League is a team competition league where teams of 6 players, made up of 2 singles matches and 2 doubles matches play weekly.  The match scoring is the same as USTA tennis scoring rules with the team winning the best out of 3 sets being declared the winner.  Although the overall team score is based on an average calculated by taking the number of sets won divided by the number of sets played.  The tennis teams with the highest two averages win 1st and 2nd place in a given division.

The Microchips tennis team has been playing together for over 30 years with Ed Peña as the captain during that time.  Two of the original players are still on the team besides Ed.

The tennis team was originally all players that worked for Motorola, Inc.  Over the years, people retired from Motorola and others went to work for other companies.  Since Ed Peña now works for Applied Materials, the tennis team is now made up of tennis players from Applied Materials, Motorola retirees and employees, and Freescale employees.

After a slow first half of the season, the Microchips made a very strong comeback in the second half of the season, and almost caught up with the leading tennis team. Unfortunately, the lead was too big for the Microchips to get to first place. The Microchips tennis team had an average of .639 which is the highest ever for the tennis team, and usually good enough to win first place.  The winning tennis team, Serve Deep, had an average of .686.

The tennis team is taking the winter off to rest and spend more time with their families.  But the next team tennis season starts in January 2007. The tennis team will once again drive to do the best they can to win their division.
