NHL Hockey - A scary night in Detroit

I don't write about NHL Hockey very often, nor do I follow it much. This morning, I awoke to the news that at last nights Detroit Red Wings game defenseman Jiri Fischer collapsed from a seizure after returning to the Red Wings bench. It was touch and go and Jiri Fischer's heart had to be restarted; but I was happy to hear that he is in stable condition at a local Detroit hospital. Here is a link to the full story courtesy of WXYZ in Detroit:

This incident is a good example of the irrelavance of sports in light of real life. The images of the fiance being led to the ice as if this could be a fatality plus the players skating full speed to get a stretcher over to the bench will stick with me for sometime. I think it was a class move for the Red Wings to cancel the game; and I didn't see much negative reaction from anyone on that front. A game can be played another day, life is much more precious and fleeting. Jiri Fischer, us Pittsburgh Penguins fans wish you a speedy recovery and we hope to see you back on the ice soon, if that is in your best interests. Godspeed!

The heart of the matter

In today's sports society there is such an emphasis on size

being the end all and be all of things. I firmly believe in the

intangibles like heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears that can surely

move mountains. A story from my youth may emphasize this:

One of our favorite sports was pickup football. I was small kid,

knee high to a grasshopper, and I remember the day I put the

"big boy" down. He as playing running back and I was on defense.

He yelled to the quarterback to pitch him the ball so all could watch

him run over me. Ha ha, so he thought. Nah, it's not the size, I knew

that! I gritted my teeth and prepared for the impact. I think if you

can summon up a rage in a situation like this it can offset any

lack of size. Hey, Jack Lambert did it for like 12 years in the NFL.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I flattened him! Literally picked

him up off the ground and slammed him down for a short gain.

When the air was restored to his body, he mumbled, nice tackle dude.

So that day, the bully had a new found respect for the Catholic Runt,

and though we were not the best of friends you knew that all had

changed. Learned alot that day.....now who else wants some?

Where else can ya.....?

Golf, an interesting sport indeed. Where else can you walk

onto a course as say an 18 year old; and pick up with a threesome

consisting of an Accountant Father, his Car Selling Son, and some

guy named Moe. This guy Moe, wow, he uses a 9 Wood from the

tee and hits the lowest line drives you'll ever see....but gets the job

done as a sub 80 player. As for the Accountant Father (never did

get the name), he cheats like a son of a gun; but does it with humor

and style so who's gonna complain? His son is the player of the

group....a wannabe Nickalaus who was just a tap in shy of making

the big time. Where else can four people who never knew each

other before; and who will never see each other again bond for

four hours of blood, sweat, and bogies. It's Golf I tell ya........the

greatest game of all. Tee one up today!
