Me, the sad sack!

Good evening and welcome to my sports and recreation ramblings.

I wasn't sure what to write about tonite. The Steelers are 2 - 0

and look like a candidate for best in the NFL. The Penguins have

young Sidney who looks like the second coming of Mario with some

other new faces thrown into the mix as well. The Pirates, well, wait

till next year there.......  :(   Pitt, if we can't beat Youngstown St.;

Mr. Wannstead will be floating down the Allegheny River on a

coal barge. So with all this going on, I shall write about, my race

with a Mini Chopper.

My story begins with a discovery I made in a stockroom where I

work. There is sat, the Mini Chopper. No, not the food processor

silly; the motorcycle version except this one is for kids and runs

on an electric battery. It was a reject from Christmas '04; on

clearance and long forgotten. The price was right, so I brought

it home hoping for a big reaction. He loved it! Must have said

it a hundred times. Now, this is coming from a kid who has detailed

war figure replicas circa Attilla the Hun; so it takes alot to please.

He began getting the hang of riding the thing after a couple of

days. Didn't help that he never mastered the art of bike riding;

I figured this would help in that endeavor as well. So, let's cut to

today. We're in the park and he challenges me, the former star

runner, to a 3 Lap race. Mini Chopper  vs. Sad Sack. Well, I can

take a little bike, right? So away we go and soon I knew my fate

was sealed. Half way thru I had a fleeting lead; but was passed

and he never looked back. I got a rude awakening today, I'm

old and feel like I'm carry sacks of wet cement. Where have those

limber no lung burn days gone? Is it time for the eye of the tiger?

Running up steps of a library or museum or something while being

chased by little kids? Stay tuned.

Tough to Write Lite Tonite

Hi Friends!

Well, in the wake of Katrina I feel the need to weigh in and simply

say our thoughts and prayers are with the Gulf Coast Area and in

particular New Orleans. New Orleans, the Big Easy the call it. Home

of the Mardi Gras and the French Quarter. It's all gone now, but

Americans are hard to keep down for long, and the city I am quite

sure will one day pick up where it left off. The only sports tie in

that I can think of is the New Orleans Saints playing wherever they

can as the NFL Season opens. The burning question is, should they

play a "game" when there is so much suffering and unrest in the

area. Kind of like the argument during 911 that stopping things

would be letting the terrorists win. That year, the NFL took only

one game off. The  Saints are a proud franchise that has had a

history of losing with a few notable brightspots during the years.

One is the famous 60 yard field goal by Tom Dempsey in 1970

I believe it was. Another great story was Archie Manning, a great

quarterback who carried some awful teams to close to respectibility.

On a better team, it would have been a different story for Arch; but

as a native Louisianian he would have had it no other way. It was

nice to see Archie and his famous sons (Eli and Payton) getting

into the emergency zone a few days ago to help rescue people.

Seems odd that you have Geraldo Rivera, Dr. Phil, and the

Mannings saving people and FEMA saying help is on the way.

An elderly lady called her son for 4 consecutive days asking when

they would be there to save her. Well Mum, FEMA says help is

coming..........on the 5th day she drowned. So thanks Mannings for

doing something that FEMA was unable to do, actually get in and

help; see, athletes are more than just "game" players. We'll leave

that to the politicians.
