Midlife Crisis

My midlife crisis will be arriving on January 20, 2006. It is a new Honda CB900 Hornet. I was a keen motorcyclist for many years in my youth and now that the kids have grown up its time to buy a bike again. I'm writing a diary for the first year and this will form the basis for a book. I'll let you know how it all goes. And of course there is an excellent classic book about this already called: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Ciao

Life Blog

The concept of keeping an electronic life diary is a good one. The idea is to reflect daily and then make connections between entries overtime and strengthen the relationships and insights that arise.

Of course I have not tried it yet, but I think it will be on my New Years List. As I'm slowly aging and mellowing the number of connections I make between disparate things and ideas is growing. I think this is the end product of having an active mind (?hyperactive mind).

I'm hoping that my connections will zap any hint of Alzheimers that may sneak up on me.

Ciao

Leonardo was a Renaissance Man

Hi All

I have to stick up for Leonardo de Vinci here. A scholar has said that Leonardo can not be ranked as a Renaissance man because he did not write any poems or music - what temerity. To me the term renaissance man refers to a person who has wide ranging interests and genius. The person doesn't and indeed can not be a genius in every field. However good old L comes close.

Next semester I'm studying the Renaissance in Europe so maybe I will become more enlightened about this subject.

May the force be with you (or at least gravity)

Hint of the Day

I am reading a very interesting book by Richard Restak called Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot. In this book he suggests a great stress reduction technique. This is to listen to an audiobook and read along apace. He uses the example of the Pickwick papers. By doing this we slow our reading down to a normal conversational speed. Several hundred years ago people were amazed if people could read silently as reading was usually done aloud. The mass invasion of our brain by disjoined media images often causes us to read in an unfocused way.

I'm going to give it a try. I'm looking for an island of Calm in the midst of niose and confusion.

Kind Regards

DK

Home to New Zealand

"Bookstores are sanctuaries. Places to lose yourself, escape the harsh demands of daily life, find new ways to dream and new sources of inspiration."

Jeremy Mercer

I have just arrived back in NZ after a trip to San Francisco on business. I found a great bookstore called Cody's and also visited Barnes and Noble. So as you can no doubt guess I have purchased more books.

One advantage of a 12 hour flight each way is that you have plenty of time to read!

Keep Well
