Satisfaction

Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be content with what you have.

Doris Mortman

What a great quote and how true. We are often convinced that having things will make us happy, but our unhappiness tells us otherwise. Feeling comfortable with yourself and to be at ease in your own skin is surely the answer.

Have a great day/night/morning/afteroon/evening etc

A Little Bit of Chaucer

For he would rather have at his bed's head,

Some twenty books, all bound in black and red...

Yet, and for all he was a philosopher,

He had but little gold within his coffer;

But all that he might borrow from a friend

On books and learning he would swiftly spend...

 Geoffrey Chaucer

Chaucer is my kind of guy - he nails the book reading obsession on the head.

Thought provoking Brain Dynamite!

The Internet stands ready as a monastery-on-demand for the dark age after the Rome that is the academic establishment has fallen.

Anon

This quote really grabbed my attention, but I can't remember where I accessed it from. The world of the mind is moving from academia onto the web, without some of the constraints that come from the traditional PhD grind where obesiance to one's professors, and good behaviour is paramount to success. We are seeing the emergence of Internet communities that fill the collegial role that used to be seen in our universities. For the humanities in particular (due somewhat to the gross misuse of adjunct faculty instead of PhD trained staff with tenure)has meant that the Humanities are enjoying a Renaissance on the Net amongst those who see Humanities study as an avocation rather than a vocation.

Up with the Revolution or Up the Avocation

Peace and Joy to you all

What the Dickens?

I have just finished reading The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. I loved it. It transported me back into early 19th century England. The writing is so descriptive and Pickwick and his offsider Samuel Weller are very amusing characters. I would give it 9/10.

 have a happy weekend

RSS is great

I have just downloaded an RSS reader over the last few days and it is great. I have now added all my favourite Blogestate blogs onto it and I get notified whenever one of these blogs is updated. So if you don't already have one - give it a go.

I sent off my last assignment for the year last night so I have 3 months of unstructured reading ahead of me before I head into the final year of my BA (Humanities). While I sometimes wonder why I punsh myself with ongoing study, it certainly keeps the gray matter working.

 Have a great day

Reading as a Mirror

I don't know about you but I find that when I read it causes me to reflect on my own experience. You read a book and it mirrors back yourself in a sense. The best books are those that make you think and help to change your world view or attitudes. I'm taking a break from fiction and reading some thought provoking non fiction - very challenging.

 Ciao
