Literature and the Love of Lifepresented by Dr Kelp2005-10-31Sugarless CoffeeIt is now a week since I stopped having sugar or sweetener in my coffee and I have to say I feel great and I'm losing weight. Also saw the documentary Supersize me which had a sobering message about eating junk food. So I need to look after my health to ensure that I have more quality reading time. Best wishes to you all DK www.angelfire.com/md/haematology Posted at 04:24:23 PM | Post Comment | Read Comments (0) 2005-10-30New Years Resolutionhttp://www.startxchange.com/users/drkelp/ I have just started my new years resolutions: Lose weight Exercise more Be happy Be positive Focus on others rather than myself I've decided that evry day starts a new year - there is no need to wait until Jan1 comes along. Reading books is great but we need to engage and reflect on what we have read. In reading Letters to His Son by Lord Chesterfield (an 18th century text) I was challenged to reflect on my thoughts re his advice. Lord Chesterfield was famous for his saying, "The Graces, the Graces, the Graces" when questioned about what was important for a young man in society. The advice comes across as being very superficial and his obsession with outward appearance and behaviour gets wearisome after a while (this is a long book!!). However I did enjoy one point he made about reading the world and our environment and persons as we would read a book. Benjamin Disraeli in Sybil In fact I would almost say that it is the first step. The second step is to have a hunger for knowledge and to strive to feed the hunger. Jerome.K. Jerome I would change the pipe or two for a book or ten... Fiction has to make sense." I couldn't have said it better myself. Life is a rich tapestry but we always see it from behind. I had a very enjoyable book club meeting last night. We discussed Ellie and the Shadowman by Maurice Gee. The next meeting we will read The Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong. I have been studying at tertiary level on and off since 1973, that is over 30 years - hard to believe. However my appetite for formal study is now waning and once I finish the BA (Humanities) I started 2 years ago I'm just going to hang around in libraries and bookshops. I must point out however that I have been working all this time as well so I have not been "enjoying the laid back campus life" of youth. I now have an alphabet of letters after my name but I don't think I'm any wiser? Any other perpetuals out there?
