Lady Chatterley's Lover

  1. "Although written many years ago, Lady Chatterley's Lover has just been reissued by the Grove Press, and this pictorial account of the day-to-day life of an English gamekeeper is full of considerable interest to outdoor minded readers, as it contains many passages on pheasant-raising, the apprehending of poachers, ways to control vermin, and other chores and duties of the professional gamekeeper. Unfortunately, one is obliged to wade through many pages of extraneous material in order to discover and savour those sidelights on the management of a midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer's opinion the book cannot take the place of J. R. Miller's Practical Gamekeeping."
-- Ed Zern, Field and Stream, November 1959

What a great quote...

Ever tried Reading James Joyce

If you like many people have given up on reading any of the works of James Joyce, you may be interested to see what his wife had to say:

"Why don't you write books people can read?"
-- Nora Joyce, to her husband James

You have to admit that she does have a point

Cheers

Advice for Writers

"If you stuff yourself full of poems, essays, plays, stories, novels, films, comic strips, magazines, music, you automatically explode every morning like Old Faithful. I have never had a dry spell in my life, mainly because I feed myself well, to the point of bursting. I wake early and hear my morning voices leaping around in my head like jumping beans. I get out of bed to trap them before they escape."
-- Ray Bradbury

And Ray should know. He has written some excellent books including The History Man

Another Library Lover

"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

Jorge Luis Borges

I have to agree with Jorge. It is heaven on earth to be surrounded by good books. Books are an element of stability in an unstable world.

Happy reading

Legacies

Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to
mankind, which are delivered down from generation to
generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn,
~ Joseph Addison  ~

And how true is that quote. From books we can be taught by the greatest minds of humanity.

Cheers

Thoreau and Traffic Pods

There is something about books that have kept humankind on a track of progress. I liked Thoreau's quote below:

Books are the treasured wealth of the world, the fit inheritance of generations and nations."

Henry David Thoreau

Blackmask Online

For those of you who use eBooks I would like to recommend an excellent site: www.blackmask.com This site has over 13000 free eBooks available in a number of formats. All the books are pre 1920 and are thus out of copyright. I have found some real gems there and all the classical books are there.

I also have a book recommendation. The book is set in New ZEaland and is called Ellie and the Shadow Man. The author is Maurice Gee one of NZ"s foremost writers. The story line goes from the 1950's through to thecurrent time and follows the life of an artist called Ellie and follows her progress. It is a gripping read and I couldn't put the book down.

Kind Regards

Spring has Sprung

Well its a beautiful spring day here in lovely New Zealand. And guess what it is reading season. Spring makes me feel glad to be alive and opens up new vistas of potentiality. A great time to blossom forth along a new line. I'm about to take a quick walk to the library in the wonderful weather. For a change I will borrow the books not buy them...

Enjoy Life

Great Book Quotes

Hi All

Some meaningful quotes about reading:

The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.
         James McCosh

Anyone who has a library and a garden wants for nothing.
         Cicero

To acquire the habit of reading
is to construct for yourself a refuge
from almost all of the miseries of life.
         W. Somerset Maugham

I have now gone over 3 weeks without buying a book - this is a record for me - Sounds like Readers Anonymous: My name is drkelp and I'm a Reader.

And just to back that up I have another quote:

Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?
~ Henry Ward Beecher ~

Have a great week
