Although my domain is not due for renewal until October 4, 2006. Today in the mail I received a legimate
looking domain name renewal notice. The letter began by saying that "As a courtesy...........and went on
to say that even though my domain is not due for renewal until October 4, I must respond by May 31, if
I wanted to take advantage of their offer. (Why)

They were asking for twice the amount that I am now paying for a 1 year registration. And that I could put the Low Fee on my credit card. Oh, and they did provide me with a Self-Addressed envelope however I was required to pay postage and give them my email address or register online but I still had to provide them with a valid email address in order to register. Wouldn't you think that they would have my email address already. They seemed to have all my other pertinent information already.

So I decided to look into this and found out that this company is a "Scam". I was told that there are many of these companys out there that prey on unsupspecting domain name holders. Their domain company's name "Domain Registry of America"implys that they are a top level domain and that you should feel secure in switching your domain name to them. They did not offer to discount or refund that portion of the year's registry fee that I would be losing from my current hosting company, if I switched to them.

I guess that I am not a very savvy Internet Marketer because I thought that my domain name was secure from these people. The name of Domain Name Holders and their pertinent information it seems is readily available on the Internet.

Should Domain Name Holders and their pertinent information be so readily avaiable or should we have tighter security regarding who can and at what time and for how long that our information is available for these people to market to us. Did you know that by going to www.betterwhois.com you can find out who owns a domain name along with all their information and that if you pay some hosts a small fee they will keep your information private.

We require that our Online Payment Processor's have better security shouldn't the same be true for our Domains? We all must do our own "Due Dilligence" until things change on the Internet or the"Scammers and Rip-off artists will take advantage of us
