Squeeky wheels get the grease2007-06-03New Yorks Newest Family2007-06-03New Yorks winged family has babies.Rochester N.Y. has 4 new additions to their Peregrine Falcon family. 4 females who are only a few weeks old. All are fat and healthy. They just had their "banding day" which is when the eyases (babies) are taken from the nest and banded then put back. They are also given names on this day.Peregrine falcons were once on the endangered species list, due to pesticide usage through out the United States. Especially DDT. In 1999, the U.S. government took the Peregrine Falcon off the endangered species list but will continue to monitor Peregrine populations. The Peregrine Falcon remains on the Endangered Species List of most states in the eastern United States. http://rfalconcam.com/rfc-main/mainView.php You can go to this url to see live pictures of the eyses, each camera shot is updated every few minutes. You can also read about the Falcons history and how they came to be one of Rochester's "elite" families. UPDATE: THe fledglings have left the nest. It took almost 2 weeks for the babies to take flight. But all are well an soaring the skies. Rmember to come back next year to see the newest New York family.
