My Home Town - A Long Time Ago!!

A long time ago in 1940 I was born in my Home Town of Dansville, New York. It was and is nestled in the beautiful Genesee Valley where the grass is green in the Spring, Family reunions, picnics and fun things in the Summer, the leaves change to a golden color in the Fall and ground turns white with snow in the wintertime.

My home town a long time ago about 1790 the first settlers began moving in to the area. One of the early settlers was Captain Dan Faulkner, storekeeper and militia leader. The Village of Dansville was named after Captain Faulkner, from my recollection was first called Dan's Village.

A long time ago from 1800 to the 1870's the village flourished with flour mills and saw mills springing up along the creeks. Locals fought in the war of 1812, the first newspaper "Village Chronicle" was established.

A long time ago in my home town around 1840 the Dansville branch of the Genesee Valley Canal was completed doubling the village population. The Town of North Dansville was established and the Village of Dansville was incorporated. In 1850 half of the village was destroyed by fire.

A long time ago in my home town around 1870 Clara Barton came to Dansville and stayed for about 10 years. About 1880 Chaper No. 1, American Red Cross was founded in Dansville.

You see there is a lot of history in My Home Town as there is in everyones home town.

What an interesting story! I've never really read anything about Clara Barton until now. I really liked it Bob, thanks.
