The Eye of The Storm - 20 to 30 miles is the difference.

Katrina was her name.

Had hurricane Katrina stayed the course the 10 to 15,000 people housed in the Louisana Superdome would not have gotten the busses to take them to the Houston AstroDome.

You see the original course  was about 20 miles to the West.

Orleans Parish is under water and they are saying that it will take at least 30 days to pump out the water.  Water in the city is 20 feet deep. Residents will not be able to return for sometime due to the flooding.

Had the eye of the storm come ashore 20 to the West it would have, by some predictions taken up to 6 months to pump out the water.

Power won't be restored for quite some time. Schools won't start again until possibly December 1.

I live in Monroe Louisana which is North of New Orleans about a 5 hour drive. As the storm progressed through Gulfport and Biloxi Mississippi wrecking havoc on the beaches where the casinos are moored in the bay. At least two of the casinos were inland about 5 blocks and virtually destroyed.

I drive for a Limo service that transport railroad crews to their trains. I was taking 2 crews to Livonia, Louisiana which is Northwest of New Orleans. As we were traveling south on route 165 in Louisiana one of the crew members said, it is amazing that only 60 to 80 miles to the East of us Katrina was moving North through Mississippi.

Residents evacuated to Northern Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. These people will be living in civic centers, shelters and tent cities for quite sometime until they can return to their homes.
