Web2.0 Marketing Secrets

Trying to explain Web2.0 is a lot like the old story of the three blind men who each described the elephant as entirely different object. The guy that grabbed the tusk said is was smooth and hard, the guy that grabbed the snout said it was like a snake, and the fella that grabbed the leg said it was like a tree.

Well, Web2.0 is like that elephant - it can be visual, it can be sound, it can be just plain text, and it can be delivered from a variety of different websites using multiple formats.

Web2.0 Marketing Secrets allows you to grasp the entire concept of Web 2.0 instead of just looking at it as parts.  Understand what Web2.0 is and how it applies to your online business all in one very affordable package.

The Saga of Alexander Ponosov

Alexander Ponosov is the principal of a school in the
Perm region of Russia who is now facing five years in
a Siberian prison camp and a fine of 266,000 rubles
(approximately $10,000).

His crime???

Alexander Ponosov purchased ten computers for student
use in his school. The computers came with Windows
pre-installed. Unfortunately the pre-installed Windows
was pirated software. (Alexandr Posonov claims he
believed the software was legitimate.)

Mikhail Gorbachev has interceded and asked Bill Gates
to drop the charges. The initial Microsoft official
response was that it was the Russian government enforcing
the law and not a Microsoft issue. Microsoft stated "We
do respect the Russian government's position on the
importance of protecting intellectual property rights."

Software piracy is known to be rampant in Russia as well
as China and India and Microsoft has asked those countries
to crack down on piracy. Indeed, software piracy is a
major issue keeping Russia out of the World Trade Organization.

I doubt the Russian government could detect pirated software
without someone from Microsoft notifying them. Clearly they
are the plaintiff.

So far, after reading several reports, no action has been
taken against the sellers of the computer. Unfortunately the
prosecutors appear to be cracking down on unsuspecting users
and not the pirates themselves.

Russian President Vladimir Putin last week commented "It's
ridiculous to just arrest a chap for using computers."

The case is drawing quite a bit of attention in the international
press.

2007 Nonprofit Technology Conference

At the 2007 Nonprofit Technology Conference in Washington, DC, on April 4-7 more than 1,000 people will come together to connect with colleagues, learn about the issues, share their knowledge with others, and, of course, have fun. Learn what works, what doesn't work, and what is in the works when it comes to using technology in the nonprofit sector.

This year's event will coincide with Penguin Day Washington DC 2007

At local Penguin Days non-profit organizations explore the range of issues and options involved using Free and Open Source Software (F/OSS).

Penguin Days have been established with the intent to bring together open source developers and technology support staff for nonprofits

Hacker or cracker?

In the Linux and Open Source communities, the title hacker is a term of respect.  A hacker is a person of great skill and arcane knowledge who can bend computers to his will and make them do clever things undreamt of by their designers.  In mainstream culture, a hacker is an evil villain who uses his technical prowess to steal or vanalize things.  The hackers are rather annoyed by this misuse of a noble word and have suggested using cracker to describe  a malicious person who breaks into computers.  But, alas, the mainstream definition has become too firmly entrenched.

Billy Davies 2.0 will highlight achievements by hackers, in the original sense.

The Freely Project

What is the Freely Project?

The Freely Project The Freely Project was setup for the advocacy and encouragement of Open Source Software (OSS) and Linux usage within churches and Christian organisations. Members of the project have a range of technical abilities and denominations. The Project does not have a statement of faith, nor does it require members to be of the Christian faith in order to participate, on the understanding that the Project is specifically for Christian organisations, and thus most members will likely either be connected with the Christian community, or the Linux/OSS community.

Why was the Project setup?

The Freely Project was setup following the realisation that churches could benefit greatly from using OSS and Linux, and the belief that there are sound ethical and philosophical reasons why this should happen. However, it was recognised that many churches were unaware or unable to take advantage of these benefits, and that a coordination of resources would be advantageous.

What does the Project do?

We hope that, over time, the project will:

  • Provide free consultancy on the use of OSS and Linux within churches and Christian charities
  • Coordinate with Linux users and local Linux User Groups (LUGS) to provide installation services for churches and Christian organisations
  • Encourage the use of OSS and Linux to churches - recognising that OSS for Windows may provide an initial step for the majority of churches
  • Raise awareness of the ethical/philosophical reasons behind Linux and OSS, and also the issue of piracy and/or licensing issues
  • Encourage and be actively involved in the development of open source applications specifically designed for churches

IT for Non-Profits

My latest Squidoo project is the resource "Information Technology for Non-Profit Organizations" and it will be a Squidoo lens into the specialized world of IT help for NPOs.

With "Information Technology (IT) for NonProfit Organisations (NPOs)" my goal is to promote both Free(Libre) and Open Source Software as well as The Freely Project to the general public overall and to increase public awareness of FLOSS and it's benefits to NPO's.

As a result, my technology-based website GBZ Technology is changing focus more to the NPO sector.

Check out the new project my clicking here.

Our Montrose Software Freedom Day (SFD2006) is drawing near.

Hilary, the local frugal librarian published an excellent artricle on the Susquehanna County Library website which uses Free and Open Source Joomla! Content Management System.
