Teachers or Coaches--Which is more important

I have always been of the belief that the education of our youth is just about the most important thing that can be done for them.  But we all should know that teachers made little money compared to the amount of time and effort that they had to put in just to be able to become teachers.  It is a really sad ratio.

Just recently, the coach of a nearby University was offered a hugh amount of money to move to a college in Colorado.  Of course he took the job.  The Colorado college is even paying his previous employer a hugh amount to buy out his contract.

With the amount of mony that is involved both schools could  afford to increase the income of all of their other employees--Mostly teachers---to a reasonable amount.  But obviosly the education of our youth is not nearly as important as sports.

It makes me sick when I hear numerous professional athletes speak only to hear that they are nearly illiterate, yet many of they were formerly college athletes.  WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

I realize that the schools use sports as a way to raise money for the schools but why is sports more important than education?

I agree that our youth are losing out, not only with sports but with the pushing through to higher grades because of "socialization" instead of ensuring that they know the work they are supposed to know. Back in the old 1 room schoolhouse, you didn't advance until you knew the material. Maybe it's time to return to those days. The teachers had up to 30 or more kids in their classes and still managed to teach the kids. Of course there was more discipline and more respect which is something that is GREATLY lacking in most of our schools. There is lack of respect for people and property and no one seems to be doing much about it.

And the athletes and celebrities that we worship don't seem to have any respect for themselves or others around them in many cases. And these are the heros that our children idolize.

Hi Bear

All of the wrong messages are going to our kids. While sports are important they don't touch the need for education. The ability to learn and investigate things for yourself. Maybe coaches should only be allowed to get paid the same as school teachers. Thank God for dedicated teachers.

Cheers

I am so glad that I'm not the only one who strongly believes this. My husband and I get in these 'arguments' all the time about the importance of EDUCATION and the "importance" of sports. ((And guess what? He went to college to become a teacher (on a football scholarship, no less) and didn't take the teachers jobs offered him, because they didn't pay! :| ))

I do realize that the whole physical coordination and teamwork and team spirit, etc., are important, BUT we haven't enough teachers/professors anymore. Part of the reason there is simply -- the job doesn't pay!

I have long since felt that "our" priorities are seriously out of whack. EDUCATION comes WAY before sports. Our teachers are the only other people in our children's lives that have some sort of upper-hand and influence.

If the teachers position would pay better, then we would have more young people wanting to go into that profession, thereby bettering our overall educational system for our children....
why can't we get more people to see that?
