LIFE IN KOREA

Hello From Korea

I am currently living in South Korea. My husband and I first came here in Oct. 2002. We are from Western Canada (Alberta). My husband grew up in Winnipeg, and I grew up mostly in British Columbia. We have 3 boys, all in Alberta; my first son, age 25; my second son, age 22; my third and youngest son, age 18. We came to Korea with our youngest son, who was then 14. He is now almost 19, and in Grade 12. He was with us here for about 9 months, then went back to Canada for Grade 9. He came back to Korea for Grade 10 (by internet), but he stayed at a Korean Christian Boarding High School, living with the Koreans and eating Korean food at the cafeteria. He studied the Korean language, and wrote about the Korean culture and history for one of his classes.

I enjoy doing handicrafts. I am currently working on a counted cross stitch of a famous painting of Jesus. I also enjoy going to the big Traditional Markets here. There are many small shops in several large buildings. Most of them are open; some are closed in; usually those that are on the outside of the building. I also do sewing, so I like to buy fabric and lace here. The Market that has many textiles is Samoon Market in the city of Daegu. Fabric is somewhat cheaper than in Canada. For example, I paid about $4.00/m for the cheaper kind of lining and about 12.00/m for a more expensive lining. Here it was 1000Won/yd-just a little more than $1.00 Canadian for all kinds of lining.  I find it very interesting to wander around in the Market. I will tell you about the terrain and about the culture next time.

Fragrant Regards,
Doris Litke
