Hi. My name is Glenda Schloff. I live in beautiful Coos Bay on the coast of southern Oregon.
Our 5th Wheel

At the age of 48 I taught myself how to use the computer (took to it like a duck to water! :>) )... and now, a few years later I consider myself fairly knowledgeable. Always learning though, it's neverending.

I have two dogs, a SmoothCoat Chow Chow and a Pekingnese, both rescued. They're my babies.

I had tropical fish tanks before moving into a 37 foot fifth wheel to live. I miss them, but sure don't miss cleaning their tanks, ha!
I love to read, and research. I'm an avid book collector of varied subjects. I'm also an eclectic collector of all kinds of things. Love garage sales and 'really' love BOGO sales! LOL!

I love to crochet and want to do arts and crafts and learn how to make wire jewelry, my own planters and birdbaths. I love gardening too.

I have a guitar and a 5 string banjo, but don't know how to play either one of them. sigh...someday.......

I'm married 20 years this July to a great guy who is a Boom Truck Operator for a RailRoad Bridge Repair Crew who travels all over the United States. My goal is to earn enough money from my internet business to bring him home off the road. I am determined that that will be this year!

I was going to write about a potential scam today but further research is needed. I'll let you know when I know. Stay tuned...

Bastindorf Beach OR

It's a gorgeous day today! I'd love to sneak off and take the dogs to the beach, but, I'd better stay here and work. This photo is from a couple of days ago when we went for a couple of hours. Beautiful huh?

I havsick tomato plante a couple of questions maybe someone here in Blog Estates can help me with. I'm a novice gardener and my tomato plants looked fine a week ago, but now the leaves are yellow and the plant looks sickly. Am I watering too much or not enough? Should I feed it again or what? Everything else I've planted is doing pretty good, just not the tomatoes. I picked my first artichoke yesterday, can't wait to eat it!

Okay, 2nd problem: Bear's nose is turning pink. At first, I thought he had scraped it on the fence because it started out like a small gouge. Then it started becoming pink all across the top of his nose and inside his nostrils. I took him to one Vet and she said she didn't know what it was. Gave me some cream but it seemed to make it worse. I tried using the highest SPF baby suntan lotion but it doesn't seem to help much.

BearsNoseI took him to a second Vet and he said that although it is rare in Chows, he is allergic to the sun and that it would probably heal and get black again in the winter time. And of course Bear has to lay in the doorway on the side of the deck where the hot sun hits in the afternoon.

I've started using a combination of the sunscreen and Bag Baum but it's just not healing. Any suggestions? I asked an online Vet and she thinks I should take Bear to a Vet that specializes in dermatology for animals so that a biopsy can be taken, and that is an option but thought I'd ask the Blog Estates community for any suggestions first. Any help would be appreciated.

Guess that's it for today, I'm going to get my surfing done for the day and enjoy the sunshine til it gets dark. Have a great day! :)

Hi Glenda,
I'm no garden expert but I can give some suggestions. Are those patio tomatoes? Are they getting enough sun? When did you fertilize them and how much. I never fertilize my tomatoes but then mine are out in the garden. I do crush up egg shells though if they are starting to get blossom rot and put it around their roots. Is your ground soaking wet? Or is it bone dry? Just a nice moistness would be good but not soaking and don't let them dry out completely. If you feel you should fertilize then I would only do it when they are starting to develop tomatoes otherwise they may just produce lots of greenery and not many blossoms. Plus I would think if you put too much fertilizer on it may burn the leaves.
As far as Bear is concerned I would go to a health food store and buy some teatree oil or maybe some aloe vera ( or if you have an aloevera plant break off a spike and squeeze out the juice and put it on his nose. One or the other. I'm pretty sure it won't hurt him and it may help. If you are uncertain ask the health food people they will know for sure. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate them. I fertilized the tomato plants when I planted them. I did it again today and ripped out the one that was dying. Most of the leaves were yellow. I have one in a large trash can and one smaller one in a smaller trash can. These are metal.

I have neighbors with an Aloe Vera plant, maybe I can get a piece from them and try it on Bear. I don't think it would hurt him either, it is a healing property. The park owner here suggested some stuff she uses on her horses, so I looked online for it but alsow sent an email to that site and described Bear's problem and they said I should use some stuff called Nu-Stock. http://kyhorse.com/store/health/wound/nu-stock.htm
They say that anything that smells that bad has to work! LOL. So I'll send for some of that too.

Bear says: Thanks for the hugs Gina! :)

hmm, no way to edit our comments. :(

From what our news station said, I believe I had Tomato blight. Since I took the bad plant out, the other two seem to be doing ok now. I just don't think we get enough sun in this spot. We're too close to the ocean. If I were just a mile or so up the road I'd probably get enough sun. We can be sitting here freezing with a fog bank, wearing sweats, then drive up to Walmart just a mile or two NorthEast and the sun will be out and hot! All I know is, I've got a few green tomatoes on the plants, not gettng very big fast enough.

A friend gave me an heirloom yellow tomato plant, it's growing, slowly, nothing on it yet though.

Something is eating my bell peppers, I've gotten just one so far.

The first arthichoke I picked had a big fat worm in it. I got to eat the next two though. It looks like that's all I'm going to get this year.

No corn either. The stalks are growing, but no ears. We just don't get enough hot sunny days in a row.

Next year I guess I'll plant root vegetables and lettuces and peas. The peas did real well.
