"stand down" Part I

We live in a hurried world. Do this, do that, go here, go there - and often times we lose the very essence of our lives.

Our worth is often at question and we wonder where the time has gone. It is time to stop now and then and try a little tlc for us, those we love, and some we tend to forget.

This week, I listened to a man cry as he remembered times long past and, he thought buried for good. This series is dedicated to him and so many forgotten men and women who answered the call to defend their country against all odds.

"stand down" Part I

In my long years of belonging to and working in our local Legion, and attending joint visits with our sister Post in Trenton, Michigan, I have sat and listened to the varied war stories of our War Time Veterans.

So many times I witnessed a silent tear slide down a quivering cheek as memories long buried, and perhaps, better forgotten, were brought home to the teller.

For those men and women, who sacrificed all, giving the greatest gift - their short lives, the war is over.

For those who came back, the war will never be over. For those brave men and women who answered their country's call, to protect at 'all costs,' they continue to pay a higher price. They live with the guts and not much glory of taking  human life.

Physical wounds heal. Emotional wounds scar for life. That is all too often the price they are left to pay for earning the freedom you enjoy today.

So the next time you are blessed with the company of a veteran, give them your ear in the moment of their remembrance. It will cost you short minutes - you owe them that - such a small price to pay for the freedom you enjoy today.

Coming ... Part II Aloneness

Fran - I know the feeling. Some people looked at me very stangely as I walked along the Wall (Vietnam Veterans Memorial) a few years ago. I would stop and say a special prayer for all those people represented by a column of names...knowing they made the sacrifice so you and I could be here today. Here's that short prayer:
Dear Lord, Please bless the family, loved ones and friends of our fallen heros. Please continue to pour out your blessings on them; for these people paid the ultimate price for us to enjoy our freedoms today. May you continue to bless America.

The last part really struck home several years later (9/11) when President Bush made the statement "May God Continue To Bless America". Just sent a chill through my spine and the shedding of a few tears.

Fran - thanks so much for the reminder - God Bless
