"stand down" Part I
We live in a hurried world. Do this, do that, go here, go there - and often times we lose the very essence of our lives. Our worth is often at question and we wonder where the time has gone. It is time to stop now and then and try a little tlc for us, those we love, and some we tend to forget. This week, I listened to a man cry as he remembered times long past and, he thought buried for good. This series is dedicated to him and so many forgotten men and women who answered the call to defend their country against all odds. "stand down" Part I In my long years of belonging to and working in our local Legion, and attending joint visits with our sister Post in Trenton, Michigan, I have sat and listened to the varied war stories of our War Time Veterans. So many times I witnessed a silent tear slide down a quivering cheek as memories long buried, and perhaps, better forgotten, were brought home to the teller. For those men and women, who sacrificed all, giving the greatest gift - their short lives, the war is over. For those who came back, the war will never be over. For those brave men and women who answered their country's call, to protect at 'all costs,' they continue to pay a higher price. They live with the guts and not much glory of taking human life. Physical wounds heal. Emotional wounds scar for life. That is all too often the price they are left to pay for earning the freedom you enjoy today. So the next time you are blessed with the company of a veteran, give them your ear in the moment of their remembrance. It will cost you short minutes - you owe them that - such a small price to pay for the freedom you enjoy today. Coming ... Part II Aloneness

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
Happy Father's Day to any dads, step-dads, grandfathers, surrogate dads, expectant dads, and any other dads I have not mentioned. This is your day so enjoy it to the fullest. Every day of the year, you give your best to be that significant male role model to your children or any younger person who is fortunate enough to make contact with you. Your contribution is very significant to these young people and is appreciated much more than you can imagine or perhaps they have taken the time to express to you. Rest assured, you play a vital role in the entire life of the youngsters involved and I, for one, would like to thank you and let you know how much you are appreciated. In our mixed up and confused society, those best wishes are equally given to single moms and dads who often have to play both roles to their children. You are to be commended for your diligence, care and extra love you pass on to the chikdren you have been blessed with. To the children who read this, please take the time to make a telephone call to your dad or parent who has provided you with the care and love that has helped form who you are. Let them know how much you love and appreciate them for never giving up on you. If things have been a bit rocky between you, then this little moment of appreciation will serve you well as an olive branch of healing. Our fathers will not be with us forever and tomorrow can be too late to say I love you. Take this moment and make it count for all the yesterdays it needed to be said. God Bless and enjoy the peace and wonder this day will bring you for caring and sharing.

'Fawlty Towers'
The day has been hot and humid. No breath of fresh air to grace the sticky rooms of "Fawlty Towers" - the name we give our apartment building - not that old yet full of much needed care. The view from the balcony is my saving grace to the unbearable humidity. The huge triangle of grass pointing westward, like an arrow to the future, is suddenly full of young children squealing in delight as they begin their games. As I watch them, the thought strikes my mind that it is the beginning of new concerns for new tenants - grandparent or parent, getting used to the traffic and areas they hope their children will not stray to. This is where I spent many a long hot summer caring for my two rug-rat grandsons, watching them learn the big city rules they never had to deal with in their country home. This is where they learned the rules of consideration for others, team spirit, and manners for those perhaps less deserving yet adults, who also shared their limited play space. It is in those easy moments of remembrance, that I think of you and I and where we are heading. We are much like those children, full of glee and anticipation as we play our games and learn to be an integral part of each other's lives.
