| I honestly am unsure what to say.
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, former WWF (screw WWE) wrestler Earthquake died of cancer today at 42. He was a big man (over 400 pounds) in a point where big men were being taken seriously (with big boss man and typhoon). He was in wrestling for many years, a lot of them plaing the "bad guy", and always gave his best to the crowd who had come to see him.
If you would like to learn more about him you can check out his entry in the wikipedia here: John Tenta
I cannot honestly think of anything else to say. Tenta was one of the men around when me and my dad didn't get along to well. no matter how bad it got though he and i would always take time out to watch WWF Prime time wrestling on Monday nights. From the moment it started we would chuckle at the outrageous gimmicks like Undertaker, Earthquake, The Bushwhackers and others. We would nod in approval when the matches went well and gripe at the screen when they broke down into fights.
Everytime a wrestler dies I am reminded of how much wrestling meant to me at one time, a time when it wasn't the storyline that was important, but the wrestlers and how they "performed". They were larger than life, some like the Undertaker, Andre the Giant and even Kevin Nash (aka Oz at the time or Vinnie Vegas) were litterally larger than life. you bought into their gimmics, something you can't really do anymore because it is mostly people just playing at being themselves. What happened to the I.R.S's, the Million Dollar Men, The Genius'? Where are there "Brains", "Mouth's of the South" or "Devious One's" that we used to boo when they would manage people only to usually cheat.
Off the top of my head here is who has died that was around at that time: John "Earthquake" Tenta, "Ravishing" Rick Rude, "Mr. Perfect" Curt Henning, "the British Bulldog" David Smith, Andre "the Giant" Rousimoff, Michael "Road Warrior Hawk" Hegstrand, "Flyin'" Brian Pillman, Dino Bravo, "Miss" Elizabeth Huelette, Rodney "Yokozuna" Anoia, "The Junkyard Dog" Sylvester Ritter, Raymond "Hercules" Hernandez, Ray "Big Bossman" Traylor, Lord Alfred Hayes, Robert "Gorilla Monsoon" Marcella, "Big John Studd" John Minton, Former WWF President Jack Tunney, Chris Candido, Louie Spicoli.
Looking at that list It's amazing how many people have died, many well before they should have. Rest now Gladiators, you did your job and are hopefully now being rewarded. |
