2006-03-16 Greek Olive Oil
Greek Olive Oil was an important part of Ancient Greek culture and still is. The Greeks believed that olive oil was sacred. It was used by the ancient Greeks and other Mid Eastern cultures as a food , for lighting, as a cosmetic, as a medicine and for ritualistic purposes. The Olive Tree has grown in Greece for thousands of years. It thrives in rocky soil, loves salt air and sunshine. It symbolizes endurance, the will to cling to life and is the symbol of health. Mythology claims that the goddess, Athena caused an olive tree to spring up to win favor with the inhabitants of the acropolis. Therefore, the olive tree has become an ever present symbol.
Greeks first cultivated the olive and used it as a medicinal curative. It has been used in churches and has a special position in the Greek Orthodox Religion as a symbol of peace and love.
Greek olive growers pass their high esteem for the olive tree from generation to generation by planting a new tree each time a child is born. The tree is ready to produce fruit in seven years, the age when Greek children begin school. The tree lasts longer than the life of the person for whom it was planted, so is cared for by the ollowing generation. It rewards its owners with an annual crop of olives in return for the love and work they expend caring for it.
